A comparative experimental study on the use of acoustic emission and vibration analysis for bearing defect identification and estimation of defect size

This paper gives an overview of the use of inverse methods in damage detection and location, using measured vibration data. Inverse problems require the use of a model and the identification of uncertain parameters of this model. Damage is often local in nature and although the effect of the loss of stiffness may require only a small number of parameters, the lack of knowledge of the location means that a large number of candidate parameters must be included. This paper discusses a number of problems that exist with this approach to health monitoring, including modelling error, environmental effects, damage localization and regularization.

Damage identification using inverse methods

One of the earliest documented applications of acoustic emission technology (AET) to rotating machinery monitoring was in the late 1960s. Since then, there has been an explosion in research- and application-based studies covering bearings, pumps, gearboxes, engines, and rotating structures. In this paper we present a comprehensive and critical review to date on the application of AET to condition monitoring and diagnostics of rotating machinery.

This paper provides a guideline to the literature of magnetic techniques for nondestructive evaluation. Compared with other NDE methods such as ultrasonics or eddy currents, the literature for magnetic methods is relatively small, but one of the difficulties is that it is widely scattered. This review therefore presents a fairly comprehensive summary of works on Barkhausen effect, magnetoacoustic emission, magtenic hysteresis, residual field and magnetically induced velocity change methods that have appeared to date.

Structural damage diagnosis and life-time assessment by acoustic emission monitoring

The author discusses the significance of the amplitude of acoustic emission and its usefulness as a source of information. He describes the theory and application of amplitude sorting. He also presents some experimental results and concludes that the method has a significant future role as part of a more complete characterization of emission signals.
