TL;DR: In this article, a two-round delphi survey is conducted to assess the relative importance of the main effectiveness criteria in seaports and to determine the significance of main inputs and port subsystems which can be referred as the means to achieve effectiveness.
Abstract: Organizational Effectiveness (OE) is a rather new concept in the port business literature and not widely studied before. From the systems perspective, this concept focuses on the goals of the organization, the resources needed to achieve these goals, and the relationship between the organization and its environment. The reason behind choosing a systems approach is the significant role of seaports as open systems affected by changes and developments in world trade, supply chain and logistics trends, maritime transport, and technological developments. While seaports are multi-faceted organizations that constitute different interdependent and integrated units in their structure, they can also be regarded as the subsystems of the supply chain system. As being the social and technical systems, port organizations have unique characteristics that should be examined in detail to assess their effectiveness. To assess the effectiveness of port organizations, principally a set of effectiveness measures applicable to seaports should be determined. The main aim of this study is to assess the relative importance of the main effectiveness criteria in seaports and to determine the significance of main inputs and port subsystems which can be referred as the means to achieve effectiveness. By using the systems approach, the inputs, the processes, and the outputs of the port organizations are clearly defined with a conceptual model. Thirty-three statements have been developed under the main categories in the systems model and a two-round delphi survey is conducted, and qualitative analysis of the experts' opinions is carried out. The results of the delphi survey show that the main port inputs are port infrastructure, equipments, technology, and port labor; the major port processes are ship and cargo operations together with the logistics services, safety and security, information technologies, and marketing; and the most important effectiveness measures for the seaports are productivity, efficiency, service quality, adaptability, information and communication management, profitability, human resource quality, and customer satisfaction.

TL;DR: This study evaluates Turkish university students' knowledge of nine international fashion brands to analyse the impacts of gender, field of education, and having consumed the brand, on consumers' brand knowledge.
Abstract: Purpose – Previous research has suggested that brand knowledge could be affected by companies and consumer characteristics such as consumer personality. The purpose of this study is to analyse the impacts of gender, field of education, and having consumed the brand, on consumers' brand knowledge.Design/methodology/approach – An exploratory study is designed to reveal the impacts of gender, field of education, and usage of a brand by evaluating Turkish university students' knowledge of nine international fashion brands. The survey is conducted by using convenience sampling method to reach a heterogeneous group of different departments, gender, and usage frequencies that would reveal whether these variables have an effect on brand knowledge or not. The students are also asked to describe each brand by two or three words.Findings – Significant differences are found with respect to usage, gender, and departments. Students belonging to the departments more related to fashion and female students have more knowl...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the response of port authorities to the changing market environment in which they operate and investigate the potential conflicts of interest for a port authority in matters related to the level of competition amongst terminals within a port and the amount of competition among ports.
Abstract: This paper focuses on the response of port authorities to the changing market environment in which they operate. It documents the changes taking place in the relationships between port authorities and terminal management companies and considers the strategic issues faced by these groups and other port interests. In particular, it investigates the potential conflicts of interest for a port authority in matters related to the level of competition amongst terminals within a port and the amount of competition amongst ports.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that majority of maritime studies employing EFA retain a factor solution based on the researchers’ subjective judgement, while the majority of reviewed papers failed to provide important information related to EFA explaining how the final factor structure has been acquired.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the approaches that are undertaken while applying exploratory factor analysis (EFA) in maritime journals to attain a factor solution that fulfils the criteria of EFA, achieves the research objectives and makes interpretation easy. To achieve the aim of this paper, published articles across maritime journals will be examined to discuss the use of EFA. This will be followed by an example of EFA using an empirical data set to emphasise the approaches that can be undertaken to make appropriate decisions as to whether to retain or drop an item from the analysis to attain an interpretable factor solution. The results of this study demonstrate that majority of maritime studies employing EFA retain a factor solution based on the researchers’ subjective judgement. However, the researchers do not provide sufficient information to allow readers to evaluate the analysis. The majority of the reviewed papers failed to provide important information related to EFA explaining how the final factor structure has been acquired. Furthermore, some papers have failed to justify their decisions, for example, for deleting an item or retaining factors with single measured variable. The first contribution of this study is the analysis of how studies carried out in the maritime sector have been applying EFA in their studies. The second contribution of this study is to provide future researchers aiming to use EFA in their studies for the first time an example of a complete EFA process, explaining different steps that can be undertaken while carrying out EFA.

TL;DR: The causal relationships confirm that more energy demand results in an increase in economic growth, industry value added, and the service sector (i.e., feedback hypothesis), while the sustainable supply chain system improves energy demand, FDI inflows,Economic growth, and sectoral growth in a panel of countries.
Abstract: The objective of the study is to examine the long-run and causal relationship between environmental logistics performance indicators (ELPI) and growth-specific factors in a panel of 15 selected global ranked logistics countries over a period of 2007-2015 This study is exclusive as we utilized a number of LPI factors including logistics performance, logistics competence, and logistics infrastructure with mediation of sustainable factors, ie, carbon dioxide (CO2), fossil fuel, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a region The results show that the per capita income, industry, manufacturing, and service share to GDP is affected by CO2 emissions and GHG emissions Logistics competence and infrastructure promote economic growth and sectoral value added, while energy demand and FDI inflows both are prerequisite for sustainable agriculture in a region The causal relationships confirm that more energy demand results in an increase in economic growth, industry value added, and the service sector (ie, feedback hypothesis), while the sustainable supply chain system improves energy demand, FDI inflows, economic growth, and sectoral growth (ie, conservation hypothesis) in a panel of countries

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a conceptual framework integrating the organizational relationships between supply chain and port stakeholders based on the theoretical background concerning the strategic management and the socially responsible marketing, and identify the influence of supply chain stakeholders on sustainability of ports by considering the propositions of interdependencies, power imbalance, and strategic options within resource dependence theory.
Abstract: Although sustainability is a topical concern in ports and the supply chain literature, the main focus of the academic research has been on the environmental dimension of sustainability rather than the social and economic dimensions. Since ports are indispensable nodes of supply chains involving many strategic stakeholders and activities interacting with each other, investigating the contribution of stakeholder relations on ports sustainability has emerged as a major concern. The main aim of this study is to provide a conceptual framework integrating the organizational relationships between supply chain and port stakeholders based on the theoretical background concerning the strategic management and the socially responsible marketing. This study attempts to identify the influence of supply chain stakeholders on sustainability of ports by considering the propositions of interdependencies, power imbalances, and strategic options within resource dependence theory. While this paper can be regarded as a review of port sustainability literature, the uniqueness lies on the consideration of the concept from the basis of resource dependence theory. Conceptual framework of this study suggests that ports should adopt strategies as insertion, integration and dominance for the management of interdependencies through the adoption of strategic tools to enhance effective stakeholder relations management and port sustainability.
