Abstract: Since the installation of an ITER-like wall, the JET programme has focused on the consolidation of ITER design choices and the preparation for ITER operation, with a specific emphasis given to the bulk tungsten melt experiment, which has been crucial for the final decision on the material choice for the day-one tungsten divertor in ITER. Integrated scenarios have been progressed with the re-establishment of long-pulse, high-confinement H-modes by optimizing the magnetic configuration and the use of ICRH to avoid tungsten impurity accumulation. Stationary discharges with detached divertor conditions and small edge localized modes have been demonstrated by nitrogen seeding. The differences in confinement and pedestal behaviour before and after the ITER-like wall installation have been better characterized towards the development of high fusion yield scenarios in DT. Post-mortem analyses of the plasma-facing components have confirmed the previously reported low fuel retention obtained by gas balance and shown that the pattern of deposition within the divertor has changed significantly with respect to the JET carbon wall campaigns due to the absence of thermally activated chemical erosion of beryllium in contrast to carbon. Transport to remote areas is almost absent and two orders of magnitude less material is found in the divertor.

Abstract: A new high efficiency, high resolution, fast γ-ray spectrometer was recently installed at the JET tokamak. The spectrometer is based on a LaBr3(Ce) scintillator coupled to a photomultiplier tube. A digital data acquisition system is used to allow spectrometry with event rates in excess of 1 MHz expected in future JET DT plasmas. However, at the lower rates typical of present day experiments, digitization can degrade the energy resolution of the system, depending on the algorithms used for extracting pulse height information from the digitized pulses. In this paper, the digital and analog spectrometry methods were compared for different experimental conditions. An algorithm based on pulse shape fitting was developed, providing energy resolution equivalent to the traditional analog spectrometry method.

Abstract: During the 2005–2007 JET experimental campaigns a Single Crystal Diamond (SCD) detector covered with a 2-μm thick LiF film 95% enriched in 6 Li was installed at JET and operated continuously during the whole experimental campaign with the goal to measure both the total and the time-dependent neutron emission from plasmas. After reviewing the history of diamond as neutron detector for tokamak application, this paper reports on the experimental measurements performed during that time window. The results are compared with those obtained with detectors routinely working at JET (Fission Chambers and silicon diodes). In particular it was demonstrated that using an SCD detector covered with a 6 LiF film it has been possible to discriminate between the total and the 14-MeV neutrons coming from triton burn-up. This allowed, for the first time using a single detector, the simultaneous measurement of both the total and 14-MeV neutron yields as well as their time dependency with very good reliability and stability.

Abstract: The spectral broadening of characteristic gamma-ray emission peaks from the reaction C-12(He-3, p gamma)N-14 was measured in D(He-3) plasmas of the JET tokamak with ion cyclotron resonance heating tuned to the fundamental harmonic of He-3. Intensities and detailed spectral shapes of gamma-ray emission peaks were successfully reproduced using a physics model combining the kinetics of the reacting ions with a detailed description of the nuclear reaction differential cross sections for populating the L1-L8 N-14 excitation levels yielding the observed gamma-ray emission. The results provide a paradigm, which leverages knowledge from areas of physics outside traditional plasma physics, for the development of nuclear radiation based methods for understanding and controlling fusion burning plasmas.

Abstract: A new endoscope with optimised divertor view has been developed in order to survey and monitor the emission of specific impurities such as tungsten and the remaining carbon as well as beryllium in the tungsten divertor of JET after the implementation of the ITER-like wall in 2011. The endoscope is a prototype for testing an ITER relevant design concept based on reflective optics only. It may be subject to high neutron fluxes as expected in ITER. The operating wavelength range, from 390 nm to 2500 nm, allows the measurements of the emission of all expected impurities (W I, Be II, C I, C II, C III) with high optical transmittance (≥30% in the designed wavelength range) as well as high spatial resolution that is ≤2 mm at the object plane and ≤3 mm for the full depth of field (±0.7 m). The new optical design includes options for in situ calibration of the endoscope transmittance during the experimental campaign, which allows the continuous tracing of possible transmittance degradation with time due to impurit...
