Twenty-two organo-phosphorus compounds of a variety of structural types have been examined by $^1$H-{$^{13}$C} and $^1$H-{$^{31}$P} magnetic double resonance spectroscopy. The signs and magnitudes of the $^{31}$P-H and $^{31}$P-$^{13}$C spin-spin coupling constants are sensitive to the valency of the phosphorus atom, and the nature of the groups attached to it. Parallel behaviour is noted between two types of coupling constant. The $^{31}$P chemical shifts agree with results obtained by conventional $^{31}$P single resonance spectroscopy, and the $^{13}$C chemical shifts depend on the polarizability of the phosphorus atom and its associated groups.

A $^{13}$ and $^{31}$P Magnetic Double Resonance Study of Organo-Phosphorus Compounds

Hybrid methacrylate–silica coatings derived from 3-(methacryloxypropyl)-trimethoxy silane were deposited on polycarbonate via hydrolysis–condensation reactions followed by UV curing ( λ =253.7 nm). The formation of –Si–O–Si– (inorganic backbone) and polymethacrylate (organic) networks leading to the generation of hybrid structure was monitored by UV and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies. UV and FTIR spectra showed complete polymerization of methacrylate groups during UV curing of the coatings. The silica network was initially formed through the hydrolysis–condensation reactions of alkoxy groups in the sol as evident from the appearance of FTIR peaks due to –Si–O–Si– vibrations. Further silanol (Si–OH) condensation reactions leading to the generation of more silica network were occurred simultaneously with methacrylate polymerization during UV photo curing of the coating.

Nuclear magnetic resonance of the 31P nucleus is suitable for the structural elucidation of phosphorus compounds, also for analytical and kinetic studies. In this paper, an attempt has been made towards the presentation of a comprehensive review of all 31P resonances so far determined.
