Abstract: This paper presents a new space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) technique for the control of a six-phase voltage source inverter (VSI)-fed dual stator induction machines (DSIM). A DSIM is an induction machine which has two sets of three-phase stator windings spatially shifted by 30 electrical degrees and fed by two three-phase VSIs. Despite their advantage of power segmentation, these machines are characterized by large zero sequence harmonic currents, and in particular those of order 6 k plusmn 1, which are due to the mutual cancellation between the two stator windings. The proposed SVPWM scheme, while easy to implement digitally, reduces significantly these extra stator harmonic currents. Experimental results, collected from a 15 kW prototype machine controlled by a digital signal processor, are presented and discussed.

Abstract: We propose an analytical computation of the magnetic field distribution in a magnetic gear. The analytical method is based on the resolution of Laplace's and Poisson's equations (by the separation of variables technique) for each subdomain, i.e., magnets, air gap, and slots. The global solution is obtained using boundary and continuity conditions. Our analytical model can be used as a tool for design optimization of a magnetic gear. Here, we compare magnetic field distributions and electromagnetic torque computed by the analytical method with those obtained from finite-element analyses.

Abstract: In this paper, a theoretical analysis of an axial magnetic coupling is presented, leading to new closed-form expressions for the magnetic axial force and torque. These expressions are obtained by using a 2-D approximation of the magnetic coupling geometry (mean radius model). The analytical method is based on the solution of Laplace's and Poisson's equations by the separation of variables method. The influence of geometrical parameters such as number of pole pairs and air-gap length is studied. Magnetic field distribution, axial force, and torque computed with the proposed 2-D analytical model are compared with those obtained from 3-D finite elements simulations and experimental results.

Abstract: In this paper, we apply an original numerical Schwarz-Christoffel (SC) transformation to analyze magnetic field originating from permanent magnets and the armature winding currents in a slotted air gap of an inset permanent-magnet synchronous motor. We obtained the solution of the SC integral numerically using Matlab SC Toolbox. We used this field solution to calculate both cogging torque and electromagnetic torque by integrating the Maxwell stress tensor inside the air gap. The case without inter-polar piece, which is equivalent to a surface-mounted permanent-magnet motor, is also treated. The accuracy of the developed method is verified by comparing its results with those obtained from the developed numerical finite-element models.

Abstract: This paper presents an approach for quick calculation of steady-state and transient performances of an axial-field eddy-current coupling. Based on a 2-D approximation of the magnetic field distribution, a simple analytical expression for the transmitted torque is first developed. This expression is valid for low slip values, which correspond to the normal working area of such devices (high efficiency). The proposed torque formula is then used to study the steady-state (constant-speed operations) and the transient performances of the coupling (small variations of the slip speed). The results are compared with those obtained from 3-D finite elements simulations and tests. It is shown that good agreements are obtained.

Abstract: Although the concept of variable-speed drives, based on utilization of multiphase machines, dates back to the late 1960s, it was not until the mid- to late 1990s that multiphase drives became serious contenders for various applications. These include electric ship propulsion, locomotive traction, electric and hybrid electric vehicles, ldquomore-electricrdquo aircraft, and high-power industrial applications. As a consequence, there has been a substantial increase in the interest for such drive systems worldwide, resulting in a huge volume of work published during the last ten years. An attempt is made in this paper to provide a brief review of the current state of the art in the area. After addressing the reasons for potential use of multiphase rather than three-phase drives and the available approaches to multiphase machine designs, various control schemes are surveyed. This is followed by a discussion of the multiphase voltage source inverter control. Various possibilities for the use of additional degrees of freedom that exist in multiphase machines are further elaborated. Finally, multiphase machine applications in electric energy generation are addressed.

Abstract: The area of multiphase variable-speed motor drives in general and multiphase induction motor drives in particular has experienced a substantial growth since the beginning of this century. Research has been conducted worldwide and numerous interesting developments have been reported in the literature. An attempt is made to provide a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in this area. The elaborated aspects include advantages of multiphase induction machines, modelling of multiphase induction machines, basic vector control and direct torque control schemes and PWM control of multiphase voltage source inverters. The authors also provide a detailed survey of the control strategies for five-phase and asymmetrical six-phase induction motor drives, as well as an overview of the approaches to the design of fault tolerant strategies for post-fault drive operation, and a discussion of multiphase multi-motor drives with single inverter supply. Experimental results, collected from various multiphase induction motor drive laboratory rigs, are also included to facilitate the understanding of the drive operation.

Abstract: With the advent of more stringent regulations related to emissions, fuel economy, and global warming, as well as energy resource constraints, electric, hybrid, and fuel-cell vehicles have attracted increasing attention from vehicle constructors, governments, and consumers. Research and development efforts have focused on developing advanced powertrains and efficient energy systems. This paper reviews the state of the art for electric, hybrid, and fuel-cell vehicles, with a focus on architectures and modeling for energy management. Although classic modeling approaches have often been used, new systemic approaches that allow better understanding of the interaction between the numerous subsystems have recently been introduced.

Abstract: Multiphase variable-speed drives and generation systems (systems with more than three phases) have become one of the mainstream research areas during the last decade. The main driving forces are the specific applications, predominantly related to the green agenda, such as electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EVs), locomotive traction, ship propulsion, “more-electric” aircraft, remote offshore wind farms for electric energy generation, and general high-power industrial applications. As a result, produced body of significant work is substantial, making it impossible to review all the major developments in a single paper. This paper therefore surveys the recent progress in two specific areas associated with multiphase systems, namely power electronic supply control and innovative ways of using the additional degrees of freedom in multiphase machines for various nontraditional purposes.
