TL;DR: Knowing the trauma of patients and the experience of support sources during the process of adaptation to a lower limb amputation can be effective in their adaptation with the disease and improvement of the quality of their life.
Abstract: Introduction: The effect of amputation on an individual's psychological condition as well as family and social relationships is undeniable because physical disability not just affects the psycho-social adjustment, but also the mental health. When compared to normal people, such people are mostly experiencing social isolation. On the other hand, social support is known as the most powerful force to cope with stressful situations and it allows patients to withstand problems. The present study aims to explain understanding the trauma of patients and the experience of support sources during the process of adaptation to a lower limb amputation. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted using qualitative content analysis. Participants included 20 patients with lower limb amputation due to trauma. Sampling was purposive initially and continued until data saturation. Unstructured interviews were used as the main method of data collection. Collected data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis and constant comparison methods. Results: The main theme extracted from the data was support sources. The classes include supportive family, gaining friends' support, gaining morale from peers, and assurance and satisfaction with the workplace. Conclusion: Given the high number of physical, mental and social problems in trauma patients, identifying and strengthening support sources can be effective in their adaptation with the disease and improvement of the quality of their life.

TL;DR: Iranian cancer survivors receive high levels of social support and family members are the most important source of this support, and in planning any supportive care program for Iranian cancer survivors this strength should be considered.
Abstract: Background: Social support is an important factor in psycho-social well-being of cancer survivors. There is little information about level of social support and its predictors among cancer survivors in Iran or other Middle Eastern countries. The aims of present study were to determine the social support and its prediction factors among Iranian cancer survivors. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-correlational study 187 cancer patients in one educational center and one private oncology office in northwest of Iran participated using a convenient sampling method. The data collection tool consisted of a researcher-prepared checklist and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support Assessment (MSPSS). Data analysis was performed using SPSS statistical software with descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: The total score of MSPSS was 68 from a possible score between 7 and 84. Participants believed that they received a high level of support from their family members and significant others. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that single and depressed cancer survivors and participants with lower levels of physical activity believed that they received lower levels of social support. Conclusions: Iranian cancer survivors receive high levels of social support and family members are the most important source of this support. In planning any supportive care program for Iranian cancer survivors this strength should be considered. Especially, single and depressed and patients with lower levels of physical activity need more attention.

TL;DR: Patients' needs when confronted with cancer diagnosis showed that when the diagnosis of cancer is made, patients will have a lot of needs and recognizing these demands by health authorities and clinical staffs could improve their interaction with patients.
Abstract: Background and purpose: Cancer is one of the most common growing diseases. According to statistics, its incidence in East Mediterranean region and Iran is increasingly growing. Considering the rise in the number of patients with cancer and threatening nature of this disease as well as problems of the patients and their families, the necessity to know and to understand the patients' needs and problems, especially after revealing cancer diagnosis is imperative. Recognizing patients' needs will help in resolving their problems. The aim of this study was to understand patients' needs when confronted with cancer diagnosis. Materials and methods: Using qualitative approach, the present study was done with content analysis method application. Nineteen participants including patients, physicians, nurses and patients' close relatives were chosen amongst the clients of an oncology unit, a cancer clinic, and a cancer patients support center. Purposeful sampling method was applied at the beginning and continued until data saturation was achieved. Face to face interview and taking field notes were used to collect the data. All the interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Results: Five hundred and sixty five primary codes in four categories were obtained which consisted of 'supports of family and friends', 'effective interaction of medical staffs with patients', 'services offered by supportive organizations' and 'necessity to inform and prepare the patients'. The main common theme of categories was 'support' which was the major need of patients with cancer. Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that when the diagnosis of cancer is made, patients will have a lot of needs.
