Abstract: Of 140 newly synthesized chalcone-analogous materials, 56 specimens were observed to be efficient for nonlinear optical second harmonic generation (SHG). The SHG efficiency of 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(3-pyridyl)-2-propen-1-one is discussed on the basis of crystal structure and MO calculation. In this crystal, molecules arrange themselves almost ideal manner for SHG.

Abstract: Penning ionization electron spectroscopy (PIES) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) were used to characterize self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 1-mercapto-8-bromooctane adsorbed on Au(111) from aqueous solution. The analysis of the relative band intensity of Penning spectrum indicates that the molecule stand up right to the substrate surface at room temperature. Upon heating, the molecule becomes tilted in the layer.

Abstract: Gold nanoparticles were synthesized and inkjet-printed on a paper substrate and IR-sintered to produce conductive electrodes. The electrodes were further functionalised by using self-assembled octadecanethiol monolayers (SAMs). The effect of sintering, print quality, and SAM formation were examined by topographical, chemical and electrical methods. With optimised printing parameters, a volume resistivity of ∼1.6 ×10–7 Ω m was attained by a single print layer.
