TL;DR: In this paper, the application of wavelet transforms for the detection, classification, and location of faults on transmission lines is discussed, where a Global Positioning System clock is used to synchronize sampling of voltage and current signals at both the ends of the transmission line.
Abstract: This paper deals with the application of wavelet transforms for the detection, classification and location of faults on transmission lines. A Global Positioning System clock is used to synchronize sampling of voltage and current signals at both the ends of the transmission line. The detail coefficients of current signals of both the ends are utilized to calculate fault indices. These fault indices are compared with threshold values to detect and classify the faults. Artificial Neural Networks are employed to locate the fault, which make use of approximate decompositions of the voltages and currents of local end. The proposed algorithm is tested successfully for different locations and types of faults.

TL;DR: A review and roadmap to systematically cover the development of IFD following the progress of machine learning theories and offer a future perspective is presented.
Abstract: Intelligent fault diagnosis (IFD) refers to applications of machine learning theories to machine fault diagnosis. This is a promising way to release the contribution from human labor and automatically recognize the health states of machines, thus it has attracted much attention in the last two or three decades. Although IFD has achieved a considerable number of successes, a review still leaves a blank space to systematically cover the development of IFD from the cradle to the bloom, and rarely provides potential guidelines for the future development. To bridge the gap, this article presents a review and roadmap to systematically cover the development of IFD following the progress of machine learning theories and offer a future perspective. In the past, traditional machine learning theories began to weak the contribution of human labor and brought the era of artificial intelligence to machine fault diagnosis. Over the recent years, the advent of deep learning theories has reformed IFD in further releasing the artificial assistance since the 2010s, which encourages to construct an end-to-end diagnosis procedure. It means to directly bridge the relationship between the increasingly-grown monitoring data and the health states of machines. In the future, transfer learning theories attempt to use the diagnosis knowledge from one or multiple diagnosis tasks to other related ones, which prospectively overcomes the obstacles in applications of IFD to engineering scenarios. Finally, the roadmap of IFD is pictured to show potential research trends when combined with the challenges in this field.

TL;DR: In this article, a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is used to compensate for the distortions in source current and voltage at the point of common coupling, where the DSTATCOM is connected with a filter capacitor that allows the high frequency component of the current to pass.
Abstract: The paper discusses load compensation using a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM). It is assumed that the DSTATCOM is associated with a load that is remote from the supply. It is shown that the operation of a DSTATCOM assuming that it is connected to a stiff source in such situations will result in distortions in source current and voltage at the point of common coupling. To avoid this, the DSTATCOM is connected in parallel with a filter capacitor that allows the high frequency component of the current to pass. However, this generates control issues in tracking, as standard controls such as a hysteresis control are not suitable in these circumstances. This paper proposes a new switching control scheme and demonstrates its suitability for this problem. It also proposes a scheme in which the fundamental sequence components of a three-phase signal can be computed from its samples. The overall performance of the proposed scheme is verified using digital computer simulation studies.

TL;DR: A comprehensive review on the methods used for fault detection, classification and location in transmission lines and distribution systems is presented in this article, where fault detection techniques are discussed on the basis of feature extraction.
Abstract: A comprehensive review on the methods used for fault detection, classification and location in transmission lines and distribution systems is presented in this study. Though the three topics are highly correlated, the authors try to discuss them separately, so that one may have a more logical and comprehensive understanding of the concepts without getting confused. Great significance is also attached to the feature extraction process, without which the majority of the methods may not be implemented properly. Fault detection techniques are discussed on the basis of feature extraction. After the overall concepts and general ideas are presented, representative works as well as new progress in the techniques are covered and discussed in detail. One may find the content of this study helpful as a detailed literature review or a practical technical guidance.

TL;DR: A comprehensive literature review on the applications of digital signal processing, artificial intelligence and optimization techniques in the classification of PQ disturbances and a comparison of various classification systems is presented in tabular form.
Abstract: The increasing trend towards renewable energy sources requires higher power quality (PQ) at the generation, transmission and distribution systems. The PQ disturbances are produced due to the nonlinear loads, power electronic converters, system faults and switching events. The utilities and consumers of electric power are expected to acquire ideal voltage and current waveforms at rated power frequency. The development of new techniques for the automatic classification of PQ events is at present a major concern. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review on the applications of digital signal processing, artificial intelligence and optimization techniques in the classification of PQ disturbances. Various signal processing techniques used for the feature extraction such as Fourier transform, wavelet transform, S-transform, Hilbert transform, Gabor transform and their hybrids have been reviewed. The artificial intelligent techniques used for the pattern recognition such as artificial neural network, fuzzy logic, support vector machine are reviewed in detail. The optimization techniques used for the optimal feature selection such as genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization and ant colony optimization are also reviewed. A comparison of various classification systems is presented in tabular form which highlights the important techniques used in the field of PQ disturbance monitoring. The comparison of research works carried out on the classification of PQ disturbances points out that many researchers have focussed on the feature extraction and classification techniques. Only few authors have used the feature selection techniques for selecting the best suitable features. This review may be considered a valuable source for researchers as a reference point to explore the opportunities for further improvement in the field of PQ classification.
