Abstract: The Advancing Chemistry by Enhancing Learning in the Laboratory (ACELL) project aims to improve the quality of learning in undergraduate laboratories through two interlocking mechanisms. The first is to build a database of experiments that are both chemically and educationally sound by testing them in a third-party laboratory, usually through an ACELL workshop involving both academic staff and students, to ensure that they work. The second mechanism provides personal and professional development for staff and students through a workshop process, and reinforced through on-going engagement with the ACELL community via the project website and experiment assessment and evaluation. The ACELL workshops include discussion of educational issues, both in abstract (through discussing laboratory learning in general) and concrete (through debriefing of each experiment tested) terms. This paper discusses the design of the ACELL project, and illustrates some of the successes of the staff and student personal and professional development aims. [Chem. Educ. Res. Abstract: The use of gas chromatography (GC)-combustion (C)-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) demonstrates that a single oral administration of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA, 100 mg) to a male subject significantly lowers the 13C content of etiocholanolone (Et) and androsterone (A) in the subject's urine. The difference in carbon isotope ratio (d13C per thousand) values between Et and A increases from 1.6 per thousand at the time of administration to 5.1 per thousand at 26 h post-administration, indicating preferential metabolism of administered DHEA to form Et in relation to A. Multiple oral administrations of DHEA to a male subject reveals lower d13C values during the excretion period of Et (-31.7 per thousand to -34.6 per thousand) and A (-31.4 per thousand to -33.0 per thousand) to that of the d13C value of the administered DHEA (-31.3 per thousand). Reference distributions of d13C Et and d13C A constructed from normal athlete populations within Australia and New Zealand show a small natural discrimination against 13C in the formation of Et relative to A (mean=0.3 per thousand, n=167, p=0.007). Amplified differences between d13C Et and d13C A, and in vivo 13C depletion measured by GC-C-IRMS are shown to be potentially useful for doping control.

Abstract: The influence of diet on the distribution of nitrogen isotopes in animals was investigated by analyzing animals grown in the laboratory on diets of constant nitrogen isotopic composition. The isotopic composition of the nitrogen in an animal reflects the nitrogen isotopic composition of its diet. The δ^(15)N values of the whole bodies of animals are usually more positive than those of their diets. Different individuals of a species raised on the same diet can have significantly different δ^(15)N values. The variability of the relationship between the δ^(15)N values of animals and their diets is greater for different species raised on the same diet than for the same species raised on different diets. Different tissues of mice are also enriched in ^(15)N relative to the diet, with the difference between the δ^(15)N values of a tissue and the diet depending on both the kind of tissue and the diet involved. The δ^(15)N values of collagen and chitin, biochemical components that are often preserved in fossil animal remains, are also related to the δ^(15)N value of the diet. The dependence of the δ^(15)N values of whole animals and their tissues and biochemical components on the δ^(15)N value of diet indicates that the isotopic composition of animal nitrogen can be used to obtain information about an animal's diet if its potential food sources had different δ^(15)N values. The nitrogen isotopic method of dietary analysis probably can be used to estimate the relative use of legumes vs non-legumes or of aquatic vs terrestrial organisms as food sources for extant and fossil animals. However, the method probably will not be applicable in those modern ecosystems in which the use of chemical fertilizers has influenced the distribution of nitrogen isotopes in food sources. The isotopic method of dietary analysis was used to reconstruct changes in the diet of the human population that occupied the Tehuacan Valley of Mexico over a 7000 yr span. Variations in the δ^(15)C and δ^(15)N values of bone collagen suggest that C_4 and/or CAM plants (presumably mostly corn) and legumes (presumably mostly beans) were introduced into the diet much earlier than suggested by conventional archaeological analysis.

Abstract: Catalytic C–H bond activation, which was an elusive subject of chemical research until the 1990s, has now become a standard synthetic method for the formation of new C–C and C–heteroatom bonds. The synthetic potential of C–H activation was first described for ruthenium catalysis and is now widely exploited by the use of various precious metals. Driven by the increasing interest in chemical utilization of ubiquitous metals that are abundant and nontoxic, iron catalysis has become a rapidly growing area of research, and iron-catalyzed C–H activation has been most actively explored in recent years. In this review, we summarize the development of stoichiometric C–H activation, which has a long history, and catalytic C–H functionalization, which emerged about 10 years ago. We focus in this review on reactions that take place via reactive organoiron intermediates, and we excluded those that use iron as a Lewis acid or radical initiator.
