Introduction to Smooth Manifolds

I prove that every finite-dimensional Poisson manifold X admits a canonical deformation quantization. Informally, it means that the set of equivalence classes of associative algebras close to the algebra of functions on X is in one-to-one correspondence with the set of equivalence classes of Poisson structures on X modulo diffeomorphisms. In fact, a more general statement is proven (the ‘Formality conjecture’), relating the Lie superalgebra of polyvector fields on X and the Hochschild complex of the algebra of functions on X. Coefficients in explicit formulas for the deformed product can be interpreted as correlators in a topological open string theory, although I do not explicitly use the language of functional integrals.

Deformation Quantization of Poisson Manifolds

Definitions. A parametrized (pseudo holomorphic) J-curve in an almost complex manifold (IS, J) is a holomorphic map of a Riemann surface into Is, say f : (S, J3 ~(V, J). The image C=f(S)C V is called a (non-parametrized) J-curve in V. A curve C C V is called closed if it can be (holomorphically !) parametrized by a closed surface S. We call C regular if there is a parametrization f : S ~ V which is a smooth proper embedding. A curve is called rational if one can choose S diffeomorphic to the sphere S 2.

Deformation quantization of Poisson manifolds, I

This paper gives a review of integration algorithms for finite dimensional mechanical systems that are based on discrete variational principles. The variational technique gives a unified treatment of many symplectic schemes, including those of higher order, as well as a natural treatment of the discrete Noether theorem. The approach also allows us to include forces, dissipation and constraints in a natural way. Amongst the many specific schemes treated as examples, the Verlet, SHAKE, RATTLE, Newmark, and the symplectic partitioned Runge–Kutta schemes are presented.
