Abstract: This volume is comprised of the proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Information Systems Development held August 26th-28th, 2004, at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Vilnius, Lithuania. The aim of this volume is to provide a forum for the research and practices addressing current issues associated with Information Systems Development (ISD). Every day, new technologies, applications, and methods raise the standards for the quality of systems expected by organizations as well as end users. All are becoming dependent on systems reliability, scalability, and performance. Thus, it is crucial to exchange ideas and experiences, and to stimulate exploration of new solutions. This proceedings provides a forum for both technical and organizational issues.

Abstract: Business process engineering is an important part of the advanced enterprise engineering. One of the still open issues is the question how in the enterprise system design to reuse ontological knowledge about business processes. The paper proposes to consider a family of similar business processes as a generic process and to represent knowledge about generic processes in a domain independent way. It describes the main scheme for reuse of such a domain independent knowledge when developing enterprise-wide information systems (IS). The main attention is paid to the process configuration problem. In order to solve this problem, a configurator (human being or machine) must find a set of components that fit together to satisfy the problem specification. An approach based on Description Logics is proposed for this aim. The main contribution of the paper is the proposed process configuration technique.

Abstract: In the context of enterprise engineering, strategic planning, information systems engineering, and software engineering activities should be tightly integrated. Traditional, interview-based requirements gathering and elicitation techniques are suited for this aim not enough well and often lead to the violation of the strategic alignment. The vision-driven requirements engineering has been proposed to solve this problem. The paper contributes to the further development of vision-driven requirements engineering techniques. It proposes a methodical framework that defines a complete scheme to organize different level requirements and allows to flowdown requirements from business to software level preserving their business-orientation.

Abstract: ...a quarter of a century ago I was led to the doctrine and maxim of right thinking that, if we search out all the practical consequences of a conception, we have in their aggregate the entire meaning of that conception. This doctrine, known as pragmatism, has certainly found some redoubtable defenders. Of the immediate utility of the maxim in the study of philosophy, nobody who has had experience in such use of it is ever likely to speak lightly. I believe, too, that it suggests a conception of the nature of intellect, and a theory of the relation of thought to the body, from which psychologists have still something to learn.

Abstract: It is common for organizations to maintain multiple variants of a given business process, such as multiple sales processes for different products or multiple bookkeeping processes for different countries. Conventional business process modeling languages do not explicitly support the representation of such families of process variants. This gap triggered significant research efforts over the past decade, leading to an array of approaches to business process variability modeling. In general, each of these approaches extends a conventional process modeling language with constructs to capture customizable process models. A customizable process model represents a family of process variants in a way that a model of each variant can be derived by adding or deleting fragments according to customization options or according to a domain model. This survey draws up a systematic inventory of approaches to customizable process modeling and provides a comparative evaluation with the aim of identifying common and differentiating modeling features, providing criteria for selecting among multiple approaches, and identifying gaps in the state of the art. The survey puts into evidence an abundance of customizable process-modeling languages, which contrasts with a relative scarcity of available tool support and empirical comparative evaluations.

Abstract: Over the past decade, goal models have been used in Computer Science in order to represent software requirements, business objectives and design qualities. Such models extend traditional AI planning techniques for representing goals by allowing for partially defined and possibly inconsistent goals. This paper presents a formal framework for reasoning with such goal models. In particular, the paper proposes a qualitative and a numerical axiomatization for goal modeling primitives and introduces label propagation algorithms that are shown to be sound and complete with respect to their respective axiomatizations. In addition, the paper reports on preliminary experimental results on the propagation algorithms applied to a goal model for a US car manufacturer.

Abstract: Purpose – This study endeavours to examine the influence of perceived product quality, relative price and risk, respectively, on perceived product value and, ultimately, consumers' willingness to buy private label household cleaning products.Design/methodology/approach – Respondents (157) were recruited through an in‐store survey and the data analysed using partial least squares path modelling.Findings – The results are similar to those proposed by Sweeney, Soutar and Johnson. Strong relationships between perceived relative price and perceived product value, as well as between perceived product value and willingness‐to‐buy, were found to exist. A negative relationship was observed between perceived product quality and perceived risk. The results indicate that establishing a value perception is critical in the buying process. Tangible cues exhibiting high quality (e.g. packaging, shelf space, media placement) need profound attention. Furthermore, it is suggested that risk (which plays an important part in ...
