Paying for the hydrological services of Mexico's forests: Analysis, negotiations and results

The study identifies the existence of a bequest motive, or intergenerational value, closely related with the conservation of forests in poor rural communities with communal forests under logging. A survey with the contingent-valuation question type was applied to the households of two populations living in two contrasting forest communities. Results show that 83 and 71% of head of households declared a willingness to make an altruistic sacrifice for the subsequent enjoyment of their children of this forest resource, measured in different ways. Variables such as age, gender, income, education, and forest type are closely related with the bequest motive, as other literature has found to be the case regarding private forest owners. Differences among communities show that the larger the benefits they obtain from the forest resources they own, the larger the bequest motive.

Subsidies to groundwater pumping in mexico: perverse effects & options for decoupling

The Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park is a remnant of high-mountain conifer forests and grasslands that provides ecosystem services to Mexico City. This research assesses the impact of constructing ditches, through modeling infiltration, soil erosion, and carbon sequestration with the hydrological model SWAT, based on soil information (bulk density, soil organic carbon, and soil depth) obtained from the ditches. The resulting estimates revealed that the construction of ditches negatively impacted the provision of the following ecosystem services: (i) alterations of natural conditions that allow water infiltration in more than 25% of 1 ha in grasslands, and up to 20% of 1 ha in forests; (ii) increase in potential soil erosion by 60%; and (iii) up to 30 217 t and 4522 t of soil organic carbon becoming exposed and prone to mineralization in grasslands and forests, respectively.
