Each year, Syngenta Seeds, Inc. produces over 50 seed-corn hybrids and the following year markets over 100 hybrids under the NK brand name. The fact that growing seed corn is a biological process dependent upon local weather and insect conditions during the growing season complicates production planning. In addition, customers' experiences with a particular hybrid during a given year strongly influence demand for that hybrid during the next year. To help mitigate some of these yield and demand uncertainties, Syngenta (and other seed companies as well) take advantage of a second growing season for seed corn in South America, which occurs after many of the yield uncertainties and some of the demand uncertainties have been resolved or reduced. To better manage this production-planning process, Syngenta and the University of Iowa developed and implemented a second-chance production-planning model. A trial of the model showed that using it to plan 2000 production would have increased margins by approximately $5 million. Today, Syngenta uses this model to plan production for those varieties that account for 80 percent of total sales volume.

The effect of the foreign capital and European subventions on the competitiveness of the Hungarian agribusiness’ enterprises in the last 15 years

This article investigates how governmental agricultural R&D expenditure affect economic prosperity and sustainable development, attempting to verify the hypothesis that agricultural research and development expenditures are among the key factors influencing the farmers’ income, as one of the sustainable development indicators. Statistical data were retrieved from European international databases for the period of 2004–2020 and were analyzed using the regression model. The results of the study indicate positive effects for most of the EU member states. The countries where the results validate the hypothesis are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Croatia, Ireland, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom, as a former member state of the EU. Further, the model confirms that a significant portion of farmers’ income growth is explained by the governmental R&D expenditure. These findings may change the methods and directions regarding the agricultural R&D expenditure, underpinning the macroeconomic policy and agriculture in rural areas along the pathway to achieving the sustainable development goals.

The Influence of Governmental Agricultural R&D Expenditure on Farmers’ Income—Disparities between EU Member States

Multiple channel strategy selection: A roadmap perspective for brick-and-click retailers

The main idea in this paper was to investigate how agriculture and processing sectors are connected through commercial activity, and how they influence municipal economic development in transition economies. This was examined through the influence of relevant non-price structural factors related to agricultural and processing sector on the ratio between agricultural product procurement and overall agricultural production. The focus was placed on agricultural investments and subsidies. A multi regression model was developed based on hard data provided by SORS and SBRE on a municipal level in Serbia. The analysis confirmed the relation between agricultural commercial activity and municipal level of economic development. In addition, important findings concerning municipal investment and agricultural subsidies allocation have been provided as well.

Toward the inter-channel synergy renaissance in emerging markets: evidence from adding clicks to bricks in Serbia

The topic of sustainable supplier evaluation has gained a significant research momentum in the last couple of years. This is evident from the number of papers and studies published recently. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive insight into contemporary theoretical approaches to sustainable supplier governance, as well as to determine the extent of theoretical uniformity and practical applicability of existing knowledge. Firstly, a literature review on supplier evaluation is provided, considering relevant articles from the field. After theoretically differentiating traditional from sustainable supplier evaluation, the paper identifies 4 areas of sustainability in contemporary literature and offers an analysis of existing supplier evaluation criteria from a performance and organizational perspective. In this sense, the lack of theoretical uniformity and interindustrial applicability of existing sustainable supplier evaluation approaches in modern business governance has been confirmed. Both professionals and academics could benefit from derived findings in terms of focusing future research efforts and avoiding the dangers of sustainability myopia.
