Abstract: Several studies have indicated that road crashes are more likely to occur on horizontal curves than on straight roadway segments for a good number of reasons, the most important of which is associated with the driver's behavior along the curve depending on his or her perception of the road geometry. However, the evaluation of the effects of curve features on driving performance still remains a critical issue for road safety and design. The main objective of this study is to investigate driver's behavior and his perception of road curves, which is directly related to road safety. Specifically, the effects of some curve features (radius, transition curve, visibility, cross-section) on driving performance are investigated through a multifactorial experiment based on driving simulation. Abstract: Spaceborne differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (DInSAR) has already proven its potential for mapping ground deformation phenomena, e.g. volcano dynamics. However, atmospheric disturbances as well as phase decorrelation have prevented hitherto this technique from achieving full operational capability. These drawbacks are overcome by carrying out measurements on a subset of image pixels corresponding to pointwise stable reflectors (Permanent Scatterers, PS) and exploiting long temporal series of interferometric data. Results obtained by processing 55 images acquired by the European Space Agency (ESA) ERS SAR sensors over Southern California show that the PS approach pushes measurement accuracy very close to its theoretical limit (about 1 mm), allowing the description of millimetric deformation phenomena occurring in a complex fault system. A comparison with corresponding displacement time series relative to permanent GPS stations of the Southern California Integrated GPS network (SCIGN) is carried out. Moreover, the pixel-by-pixel character of the PS analysis allows the exploitation of individual phase stable radar targets in low-coherence areas. This makes spaceborne interferometric measurements possible in vegetated areas, as long as a sufficient spatial density of individual isolated man-made structures or exposed rocks is available. The evolution of the Ancona landslide (central Italy) was analysed by processing 61 ERS images acquired in the time span between June 1992 and December 2000. The results have been compared with deformation values detected during optical levelling campaigns ordered by the Municipality of Ancona. The characteristics of PS, GPS and optical levelling surveying are to some extent complementary: a synergistic use of the three techniques could strongly enhance quality and reliability of ground deformation monitoring. Abstract: The main focused aim of developing new processing and manufacturing technologies are to reduce production or manufacturing costs, processing times, and to enhance manufactured product properties. The developed processing techniques should be widely acceptable for all types of materials including metal matrix composites, ceramics, alloys, and fiber reinforced plastics. Microwave materials processing is emerging as a novel processing technology which is applicable to a wide variety of materials system including processing of MMC, FRP, alloys, ceramics, metals, powder metallurgy, material joining, coatings, and claddings. In comparison to the conventional processes, microwave processing of materials offers better mechanical properties with reduced defects and economical advantages in terms of power and time savings. The present review work focuses mainly on global developments taking place in the field of microwave processing of materials and their relevant industrial applications.

Abstract: The use of mobile phones while driving—one of the most common driver distractions—has been a significant research interest during the most recent decade. While there has been a considerable amount research and excellent reviews on how mobile phone distractions influence various aspects of driving performance, the mechanisms by which the interactions with mobile phone affect driver performance is relatively unexamined. As such, the aim of this study is to examine the mechanisms involved with mobile phone distractions such as conversing, texting, and reading and the driving task, and subsequent outcomes. A novel human-machine framework is proposed to isolate the components and various interactions associated with mobile phone distracted driving. The proposed framework specifies the impacts of mobile phone distraction as an inter-related system of outcomes such as speed selection, lane deviations and crashes; human-car controls such as steering control and brake pedal use and human-environment interactions such as visual scanning and navigation. Eleven literature-review/meta-analyses papers and 62 recent research articles from 2005 to 2015 are critically reviewed and synthesised following a systematic classification scheme derived from the human-machine system framework. The analysis shows that while many studies have attempted to measure system outcomes or driving performance, research on how drivers interactively manage in-vehicle secondary tasks and adapt their driving behaviour while distracted is scant. A systematic approach may bolster efforts to examine comprehensively the performance of distracted drivers and their impact over the transportation system by considering all system components and interactions of drivers with mobile phones and vehicles. The proposed human-machine framework not only contributes to the literature on mobile phone distraction and safety, but also assists in identifying the research needs and promising strategies for mitigating mobile phone-related safety issues. Technology based countermeasures that can provide real-time feedback or alerts to drivers based on eye/head movements in conjunction with vehicle dynamics should be an important research direction.

Abstract: Virtual reality (VR) has become a popular approach to study human behavior in fire. The present position paper analyses Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) of VR as a research tool for human behavior in fire. Virtual environments provide a maximum of experimental control, are easy to replicate, have relatively high ecological validity, and allow safe study of occupant behavior in scenarios that otherwise would be too dangerous. Lower ecological validity compared to field studies, ergonomic aspects, and technical limitations are the main weaknesses of the method. Increasingly realistic simulations and other technological advances provide new opportunities for this relatively young method. In this position paper, we argue that VR is a promising complementary laboratory tool in the quest to understand human behavior in fire and to improve fire safety.
