Abstract: Distance-hereditary graphs have been introduced by Howorka and studied in the literature with respect to their metric properties. In this paper several equivalent characterizations of these graphs are given: in terms of existence of particular kinds of vertices (isolated, leaves, twins) and in terms of properties of connections, separators, and hangings. Distance-hereditary graphs are then studied from the algorithmic viewpoint: simple recognition algorithms are given and it is shown that the problems of finding cardinality Steiner trees and connected dominating sets are polynomially solvable in a distance-hereditary graph.

Abstract: In this paper the problem of minimal representations for particular classes of directed hypergraphs is analyzed. Various concepts of minimal representations of directed hypergraphs (called minimal equivalent hypergraphs) are introduced as extensions to the concepts of transitive reduction and minimum equivalent graph of directed graphs. In particular, we consider equivalent hypergraphs which are minimal with respect to all parameters which may be adopted to characterize a given hypergraph (number of hyperarcs, number of adjacency lists required for the representation, length of the overall description,etc.). The relationships among the various concepts of minimality are discussed and their computational properties are analyzed. In order to derive such results, a graph representation of hypergraphs is introduced.

Abstract: National adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) is considered an essential component of the health care system overhaul sought by policy makers and health care professionals, in both U.S. and Europe, to cut costs and increase benefits. And yet, along with the technological aspects, the human factor consistently proves to be a critical component to diffusion of any IT system, and is even more so regarding health care. The highly personal and sensitive nature of health care data and the associated concerns about privacy impede even the most efficient and technologically perfect system. Our objective is to investigate individuals’ attitudes towards EHR and what factors form these attitudes. If we understand individuals’ attitudes regarding EHR and the factors that influence them, we will be in a better position to take responsive measure to facilitate Privacy by Design for EHRs. A positivist research model is empirically tested using survey data from U.S. and Italy and structural equation modeling techniques. We find that perceived effectiveness of regulatory mechanisms positively impact trust; perceived effectiveness of technological mechanisms positively impacts perceived privacy control and trust; the latter two help reduce privacy concerns which, along with perceived benefits, convenience, and Internet experience, play the privacy calculus-type formation of attitudes towards EHR.

Abstract: KIVIEW is an object-oriented browsing interface to databases. The underlying internal model is a semantic network, defined via a collection of triplet facts which are governed by a small set of integrity requirements. KIVIEW's only ezternal structure is a display, called uiew, that presents all the information that is pertinent to a given object. KIVIEW features two kinds of activity, called nawgation and manipulation. Navigation is an exploration activity wherein the user repeatedly displays new views of objects that are referenced in current views. To speed up repetitive navigational tasks, which otherwise could become very tedious, viewa inay be eynchronized: the user sets up several viewa, linked in cr tree-like structure, so that when the information displayed in the root view is modified, the contents of the other views change automatically. Manipulation is a processing activity wherein the user operates on existing views to create new virtual views. Manipulation is interleaved with navigation to assemble information located while browsing into reeulte of browsing sessions. Using convenient graphic tools, these two activities are integrated into a single tool, which is flexible and effective, yet simple to use.
