Impedance spectroscopy : theory, experiment, and applications

Direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) are attracting increasing interest as power sources for portable applications due to some unquestionable advantages over analogous devices fed with hydrogen.1 Alcohols, such as methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol, exhibit high volumetric energy density, and their storage and transport are much easier as compared to hydrogen. On the other hand, the oxidation kinetics of any alcohol are much slower and still H2-fueled polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs) exhibit superior electrical performance as compared to DAFCs with comparable electroactive surface areas.2,3 Increasing research efforts are therefore being carried out to design and develop more efficient anode electrocatalysts for DAFCs.

Palladium-Based Electrocatalysts for Alcohol Oxidation in Half Cells and in Direct Alcohol Fuel Cells

Advances in electrocatalysis at solid-liquid interfaces are vital for driving the technological innovations that are needed to deliver reliable, affordable and environmentally friendly energy. Here, we highlight the key achievements in the development of new materials for efficient hydrogen and oxygen production in electrolysers and, in reverse, their use in fuel cells. A key issue addressed here is the degree to which the fundamental understanding of the synergy between covalent and non-covalent interactions can form the basis for any predictive ability in tailor-making real-world catalysts. Common descriptors such as the substrate-hydroxide binding energy and the interactions in the double layer between hydroxide-oxides and H---OH are found to control individual parts of the hydrogen and oxygen electrochemistry that govern the efficiency of water-based energy conversion and storage systems. Links between aqueous- and organic-based environments are also established, encouraging the 'fuel cell' and 'battery' communities to move forward together.

Energy and fuels from electrochemical interfaces

Platinum-based nanostructured materials: synthesis, properties, and applications.

This article introduces the radical approach of applying alkaline anion-exchange membranes (AAEMs) to meet the current challenges with regards to direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). A review of the literature is presented with regards to the testing of fuel cells with alkaline membranes (fuelled with hydrogen or methanol) and also to candidate alkaline anion-exchange membranes for such an application. A brief review of the directly related patent literature is also included. Current and future research challenges are identified along with potential strategies to overcome them. Finally, the advantages and challenges with the direct electrochemical oxidation of alternative fuels are discussed, along with how the application of alkaline membranes in such fuel cells may assist in improving performance and fuel efficiency.

Prospects for Alkaline Anion-Exchange Membranes in Low Temperature Fuel Cells†

Recent advances in the development of direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFC)

The electrochemical oxidation of methanol was investigated on Pt–Ru–X ternary metallic catalysts (with X=Au, Co, Cu, Fe, Mo, Ni, Sn or W). The catalysts were prepared by electrochemical deposition and dispersed in a conductive three-dimensional matrix, an electronic conducting polymer, polyaniline (PAni). A comparative study of the behaviour of several ternary catalysts towards the electro-oxidation of methanol shows that PAni/Pt–Ru–Mo is the most efficient anode at potentials up to 500mV vs RHE. This latter ternary electrocatalyst leads to current densities up to 10 times higher than those measured with PAni/Pt–Ru in this potential range. Moreover, the catalyst appears to be stable for potentials lower than 550mV vs RHE. According to EDX analysis, the good behaviour of the Pt–Ru–Mo ternary catalyst seems to result from the presence of a small amount of the third metal, at an atomic ratio close to 5%. This set of encouraging results has also been confirmed by preliminary measurements in a single cell direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) containing a home made PAni/Pt–Ru–Mo anode. The ternary catalyst leads to higher power densities than the PAni/Pt–Ru binary catalyst under the same experimental conditions.

Investigation of Ternary Catalysts for Methanol Electrooxidation

The electrodeposition of platinum and ruthenium was carried out on carbon electrodes to prepare methanol anodes with different Pt/Ru atomic ratios using a galvanostatic pulse technique. Characterizations by XRD, TEM, EDX and atomic absorption spectroscopy indicated that most of the electrocatalytic anodes consisted of 2 mg cm−2 of Pt–Ru alloy particles with the desired composition and with particle sizes ranging from 5 to 8 nm. Electrochemical tests in a single DMFC show that these electrodes are very active for methanol oxidation and that the best Pt/Ru atomic ratio in the temperature range used (50–110 °C) is 80:20. The influence of the relaxation time t
off was also studied and it appeared that a low t
off led to smaller particle sizes and higher performances in terms of current density and power density.
