Journal ArticleDOI
A core gut microbiome in obese and lean twins
Peter J. Turnbaugh,Micah Hamady,Tanya Yatsunenko,Brandi L. Cantarel,Alexis E. Duncan,Ruth E. Ley,Mitchell L. Sogin,William J. Jones,Bruce A. Roe,Jason P. Affourtit,Michael Egholm,Bernard Henrissat,Andrew C. Heath,Rob Knight,Jeffrey I. Gordon +14 more
TL;DR: The faecal microbial communities of adult female monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs concordant for leanness or obesity, and their mothers are characterized to address how host genotype, environmental exposure and host adiposity influence the gut microbiome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gut Microbiota from Twins Discordant for Obesity Modulate Metabolism in Mice
Vanessa K. Ridaura,Jeremiah J. Faith,Federico E. Rey,Jiye Cheng,Alexis E. Duncan,Andrew L. Kau,Nicholas W. Griffin,Vincent Lombard,Bernard Henrissat,Bernard Henrissat,James R. Bain,Michael J. Muehlbauer,Olga Ilkayeva,Clay F. Semenkovich,Katsuhiko Funai,David K. Hayashi,Barbara J. Lyle,Margaret C. Martini,Luke K. Ursell,Jose C. Clemente,Will Van Treuren,William A. Walters,Rob Knight,Rob Knight,Christopher B. Newgard,Andrew C. Heath,Jeffrey I. Gordon +26 more
TL;DR: The results reveal that transmissible and modifiable interactions between diet and microbiota influence host biology and that adiposity is transmissible from human to mouse and that it was associated with changes in serum levels of branched-chain amino acids.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Impact of a Consortium of Fermented Milk Strains on the Gut Microbiome of Gnotobiotic Mice and Monozygotic Twins
Nathan P. McNulty,Tanya Yatsunenko,Ansel Hsiao,Jeremiah J. Faith,Brian D. Muegge,Andrew L. Goodman,Bernard Henrissat,Raish Oozeer,Stéphanie Cools-Portier,Guillaume Gobert,Christian Chervaux,Dan Knights,Catherine A. Lozupone,Rob Knight,Alexis E. Duncan,James R. Bain,Michael J. Muehlbauer,Christopher B. Newgard,Andrew C. Heath,Jeffrey I. Gordon +19 more
TL;DR: The findings show that mice containing a sequenced model human gut microbiome can serve as part of a preclinical discovery pipeline designed to identify the effects of existing or new bacterial species with purported health benefits on the gut microbiomes of various human populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation, and Eating-Related Pathology in a National Sample of College Students
Elizabeth W. Diemer,Julia D. Grant,Melissa A. Munn-Chernoff,David A. Patterson,Alexis E. Duncan +4 more
TL;DR: Transgender and cisgender SM young adults have elevated rates of compensatory behavior and SR-ED diagnosis and Appropriate interventions for these populations are urgently needed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Common genetic and environmental contributions to post-traumatic stress disorder and alcohol dependence in young women.
Carolyn E. Sartor,Vivia V. McCutcheon,N. E. Pommer,Elliot C. Nelson,Julia D. Grant,Alexis E. Duncan,Mary Waldron,K. K. Bucholz,Pamela A. F. Madden,Andrew C. Heath +9 more
TL;DR: The heritability estimate for PTSD in the sample is higher than estimates reported in earlier studies based almost exclusively on an all-male sample in which combat exposure was the precipitating traumatic event, and is consistent with the absence of evidence for shared environmental influences on PTSD and, most importantly, the substantial overlap in genetic influences in PTSD and AD reported in these investigations.
