TL;DR: The analysis establishes analytically that random reshuffling outperforms uniform sampling by showing explicitly that iterates approach a smaller neighborhood of size $O(\mu^2)$ around the minimizer rather than $O(mu)$.
Abstract: In empirical risk optimization, it has been observed that stochastic gradient implementations that rely on random reshuffling of the data achieve better performance than implementations that rely on sampling the data uniformly. Recent works have pursued justifications for this behavior by examining the convergence rate of the learning process under diminishing step-sizes. This work focuses on the constant step-size case and strongly convex loss function. In this case, convergence is guaranteed to a small neighborhood of the optimizer albeit at a linear rate. The analysis establishes analytically that random reshuffling outperforms uniform sampling by showing explicitly that iterates approach a smaller neighborhood of size $O(\mu^2)$ around the minimizer rather than $O(\mu)$. Furthermore, we derive an analytical expression for the steady-state mean-square-error performance of the algorithm, which helps clarify in greater detail the differences between sampling with and without replacement. We also explain the periodic behavior that is observed in random reshuffling implementations.

TL;DR: An adaptive diffusion mechanism to optimize global cost functions in a distributed manner over a network of nodes in order to solve the desired optimization problem is derived.
Abstract: We derive an adaptive diffusion mechanism to optimize global cost functions in a distributed manner over a network of nodes. The cost function is assumed to consist of the sum of individual components, and diffusion adaptation is used to enable the nodes to cooperate locally through in-network processing in order to solve the desired optimization problem. We analyze the mean-square-error performance of the algorithm, including its transient and steady-state behavior. We illustrate one application in the context of least-mean-squares estimation for sparse vectors.

TL;DR: A distributed binary hypothesis testing setup where multiple nodes send quantized information to a central processor, which is oblivious to the nodes’ statistics is considered, which yields a tradeoff curve that yields a lower bound for the feasible region of type-II error exponents and the average number of bits sent under the null hypothesis.
Abstract: We consider a distributed binary hypothesis testing setup where multiple nodes send quantized information to a central processor, which is oblivious to the nodes’ statistics. We study the regime where the missed detection (type-II error) probability decays exponentially and the false alarm (type-I error) probability vanishes. For memoryless quantization, we characterize a tradeoff curve that yields a lower bound for the feasible region of type-II error exponents and the average number of bits sent under the null hypothesis. Moreover, we show that the tradeoff curve is approached at high rates with lattice quantization.

TL;DR: This work derives square-root based algorithms for structured matrices based on a standard Gaussian elimination technique and on simple results from matrix and linear system theory to construct a convenient transmission-line cascade that makes evident the required interpolation and completion conditions.
Abstract: We derive square-root based algorithms for structured matrices and discuss potential applications to interpolation and matrix completion problems. The mathematical machinery used here is based on a standard Gaussian elimination technique and on simple results from matrix and linear system theory. We show how to exploit the inherent displacement structure in order to construct a convenient transmission-line cascade that makes evident the required interpolation and completion conditions. We also introduce the concept of time-variant structured matrices and discuss its applications to matrix completions and time-variant interpolation problems.

TL;DR: In this article, a robust data regularization strategy for models with bounded perturbations is proposed. But the resulting procedure performs data regularisation as opposed to de-regularization.
Abstract: There are always discrepancies between design models and the actual physical systems or phenomena that they model. Regardless of their source, such perturbations can degrade the performance of otherwise optimal designs. This article discusses a design strategy for models with bounded perturbations. In comparison to other robust formulations, the resulting procedure performs data regularization as opposed to de-regularization. Applications in state-space estimation and adaptive filtering are discussed.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: This survey provides an overview of higher-order tensor decompositions, their applications, and available software.
Abstract: This survey provides an overview of higher-order tensor decompositions, their applications, and available software. A tensor is a multidimensional or $N$-way array. Decompositions of higher-order tensors (i.e., $N$-way arrays with $N \geq 3$) have applications in psycho-metrics, chemometrics, signal processing, numerical linear algebra, computer vision, numerical analysis, data mining, neuroscience, graph analysis, and elsewhere. Two particular tensor decompositions can be considered to be higher-order extensions of the matrix singular value decomposition: CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposes a tensor as a sum of rank-one tensors, and the Tucker decomposition is a higher-order form of principal component analysis. There are many other tensor decompositions, including INDSCAL, PARAFAC2, CANDELINC, DEDICOM, and PARATUCK2 as well as nonnegative variants of all of the above. The N-way Toolbox, Tensor Toolbox, and Multilinear Engine are examples of software packages for working with tensors.
