Urban Consolidation Centre: a Literature Review, Categorisation and a Future Research Agenda

How should one organize new service development? This is an important topic for decision-makers in service firms. The numerous publications on this subject are highly fragmented. This paper classifies current literature on organizing new service development (NSD) into two evolutionary stages: managing key activities in the NSD process, and creating a climate for continuous innovation. For both stages, its consequences for the initiation and implementation of new services are discussed.

Organizing Successful New Service Development: A Literature Review

Purpose – Business process management (BPM) requires a holistic perspective that includes managing the culture of an organization to achieve objectives of efficient and effective business processes. Still, the specifics of a BPM-supportive organizational culture have not been examined so far. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to identify the characteristics of a cultural setting supportive of BPM objectives.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper examines the constituent values of a BPM-supportive cultural setting through a global Delphi study with BPM experts from academia and practice and explore these values in a cultural value framework.

Findings – The paper empirically identifies and defines four key cultural values supporting BPM, viz., customer orientation, excellence, responsibility, and teamwork. The paper discusses the relationships between these values and identifies a particular challenge in managing these seemingly competing values.

Research limitations/implications – The identification and definition of these values represents a first step towards the operationalization (and empirical analysis) of what has been identified as the concept of BPM culture, i.e. a culture supportive of achieving BPM objectives.

Practical implications – Identifying these cultural values provides the basis for developing an instrument that can measure how far an existing cultural context is supportive of BPM. This, in turn, is fundamental for identifying measures towards achieving a BPM culture as a necessary, yet not sufficient means to obtain BPM success.

Originality/value – The paper examines which cultural values create an environment receptive for BPM and, thus, specifies the important theoretical construct BPM culture. In addition, the paper raises awareness for realizing these values in a BPM context.

Business intelligence in the healthcare industry: The utilization of a data-driven approach to support clinical decision making

The COVID-19 pandemic mandating isolation, quarantine, and social distancing has accelerated and expanded the use of telemedicine. This study examines the extent of the use of telemedicine and the relationship between eHealth literacy and satisfaction with using telemedicine during the pandemic. A total of 156 participants from a clinic in a peripheral community in southern Israel completed an online questionnaire. We found that 85% knew how to use the internet for health information, but only one third felt safe using it to make health decisions. Furthermore, 93% used the internet for technical needs, such as renewing prescriptions or making a doctor's appointment. Even lower use for telemedicine was found (38%) for consultation or treatment sessions. A positive association was found between eHealth literacy and satisfaction variables with using telemedicine (rp = 0.39, p < 0.001). Although respondents understood the benefits of telemedicine, they were not satisfied nor interested in online sessions after the epidemic's end, preferring a meeting involving personal interaction. Young people and academics benefit more from telemedicine, thereby creating usage gaps and potentially increasing existing inequality. We recommend developing intervention programs, especially among vulnerable populations, to strengthen eHealth literacy and remove barriers causing skepticism about the use of telemedicine during and after the pandemic.

A unified typology of urban logistics spaces as interfaces for freight transport

In Europe, there are major obstacles limiting the growth of rail freight. In this paper, we investigate problems related to the development of small multimodal terminals which are usually utilized to ensure a more environmentally friendly freight transport and serve metropolitan areas with daily train shuttles arriving from ports. The small size of such terminals and limitations of the storing area, and service and cost constraints, require that resource use is optimal, handling operations for overnight train shuttle schedules are timely, and final truck delivery is optimized. Besides designing the complete service, an optimization-simulation approach is proposed for container transportation, handling operations and container stacking in the small rail/road terminal, as well as for final delivery, to optimize resource use and time. In an original multidisciplinary perspective, the case of a Le Havre-Paris intermodal shuttle is presented using real data. Optimization/simulation results are fed into the economic model to ensure cost efficiency and conditions for efficiency, profitability for investors and also to measure the environmental impact. Our experimental results show the efficiency of our optimization-simulation approach, and the methodology used delivers full guidelines for the implementation of similar terminals. Several important research directions are finally pointed out.
