TL;DR: The construction of a DNA machine in which the DNA is used not only as a structural material, but also as ‘fuel’; each cycle produces a duplex DNA waste product.
Abstract: Molecular recognition between complementary strands of DNA allows construction on a nanometre length scale. For example, DNA tags may be used to organize the assembly of colloidal particles, and DNA templates can direct the growth of semiconductor nanocrystals and metal wires. As a structural material in its own right, DNA can be used to make ordered static arrays of tiles, linked rings and polyhedra. The construction of active devices is also possible--for example, a nanomechanical switch, whose conformation is changed by inducing a transition in the chirality of the DNA double helix. Melting of chemically modified DNA has been induced by optical absorption, and conformational changes caused by the binding of oligonucleotides or other small groups have been shown to change the enzymatic activity of ribozymes. Here we report the construction of a DNA machine in which the DNA is used not only as a structural material, but also as 'fuel'. The machine, made from three strands of DNA, has the form of a pair of tweezers. It may be closed and opened by addition of auxiliary strands of 'fuel' DNA; each cycle produces a duplex DNA waste product.

TL;DR: In this paper, loop complexes are used to inhibit the hybridization of complementary oligonucleotides, and rationally designed DNA catalysts are shown to be effective in promoting their hybridization.
Abstract: We describe kinetic control of DNA hybridization: loop complexes are used to inhibit the hybridization of complementary oligonucleotides; rationally designed DNA catalysts are shown to be effective in promoting their hybridization. This is the basis of a strategy for using DNA as a fuel to drive free-running artificial molecular machines.

TL;DR: The emphasis will be on the operation of toeholds, single-stranded sections of DNA that facilitate the process of strand removal during certain points in the operationof a DNA-based motor.
Abstract: DNA hybridization has been used to power a number of DNA-based nanostructures constructed out of DNA. Here some considerations that go into DNA-based motor design are briefly reviewed. The emphasis will be on the operation of toeholds, single-stranded sections of DNA that facilitate the process of strand removal during certain points in the operation of a DNA-based motor. Reaction kinetics measurements for toehold mediated strand exchange are reported. These measurements have served as a guide for choosing toehold lengths.

TL;DR: It is found that when intense positron bursts are implanted into a thin film of porous silica, Ps2 is created on the internal pore surfaces much more efficiently than the competing process of spin exchange quenching, which appears to be suppressed in the confined pore geometry.
Abstract: It has been known for many years that an electron and its antiparticle, the positron, may together form a metastable hydrogen-like atom, known as positronium or Ps (ref. 1). In 1946, Wheeler speculated that two Ps atoms may combine to form the di-positronium molecule (Ps2), with a binding energy of 0.4 eV. More recently, this molecule has been studied theoretically; however, because Ps has a short lifetime and it is difficult to obtain low-energy positrons in large numbers, Ps2 has not previously been observed unambiguously. Here we show that when intense positron bursts are implanted into a thin film of porous silica, Ps2 is created on the internal pore surfaces. We found that molecule formation occurs much more efficiently than the competing process of spin exchange quenching, which appears to be suppressed in the confined pore geometry. This result experimentally confirms the existence of the Ps2 molecule and paves the way for further multi-positronium work. Using similar techniques, but with a more intense positron source, we expect to increase the Ps density to the point where many thousands of atoms interact and can undergo a phase transition to form a Bose-Einstein condensate. As a purely leptonic, macroscopic quantum matter-antimatter system this would be of interest in its own right, but it would also represent a milestone on the path to produce an annihilation gamma-ray laser.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that solid Ne makes a more efficient moderator than any other material known to date, achieving an efficiency of (0.30±0.02)% for a flat layer of Ne covering a 22Na deposit.
Abstract: Slow positrons can be obtained by moderating the energetic β+ particles from a radioactive source. We find that solid Ne makes a more efficient moderator than any other material known to date. The efficiency e, defined as the number of slow positrons per β+ emitted by the source, is (0.30±0.02)% for a flat layer of Ne covering a 22Na deposit. In a cylindrical geometry, e is (0.70±0.02)%, more than twice the previous best efficiency obtained with single‐crystal tungsten. The energy spectrum for Ne has a full width at half‐maximum of 0.58 eV, somewhat broader than the spectrum of positrons from a single‐crystal metal. Moderators made from the other solid rare gases have a much lower efficiency and a larger energy spread.

TL;DR: In this paper, a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) is presented.
Abstract: Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. TL;DR: This work describes a simple method for folding long, single-stranded DNA molecules into arbitrary two-dimensional shapes, which can be programmed to bear complex patterns such as words and images on their surfaces.
Abstract: 'Bottom-up fabrication', which exploits the intrinsic properties of atoms and molecules to direct their self-organization, is widely used to make relatively simple nanostructures. A key goal for this approach is to create nanostructures of high complexity, matching that routinely achieved by 'top-down' methods. The self-assembly of DNA molecules provides an attractive route towards this goal. Here I describe a simple method for folding long, single-stranded DNA molecules into arbitrary two-dimensional shapes. The design for a desired shape is made by raster-filling the shape with a 7-kilobase single-stranded scaffold and by choosing over 200 short oligonucleotide 'staple strands' to hold the scaffold in place. Once synthesized and mixed, the staple and scaffold strands self-assemble in a single step. The resulting DNA structures are roughly 100 nm in diameter and approximate desired shapes such as squares, disks and five-pointed stars with a spatial resolution of 6 nm. Because each oligonucleotide can serve as a 6-nm pixel, the structures can be programmed to bear complex patterns such as words and images on their surfaces. Finally, individual DNA structures can be programmed to form larger assemblies, including extended periodic lattices and a hexamer of triangles (which constitutes a 30-megadalton molecular complex).

TL;DR: The striking signature of Bose condensation was the sudden appearance of a bimodal velocity distribution below the critical temperature of ~2µK.
Abstract: Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) has been observed in a dilute gas of sodium atoms. A Bose-Einstein condensate consists of a macroscopic population of the ground state of the system, and is a coherent state of matter. In an ideal gas, this phase transition is purely quantum-statistical. The study of BEC in weakly interacting systems which can be controlled and observed with precision holds the promise of revealing new macroscopic quantum phenomena that can be understood from first principles.

TL;DR: The 2010 self-consistent set of values of the basic constants and conversion factors of physics and chemistry recommended by the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) for international use is presented in this article.
Abstract: This paper gives the 2010 self-consistent set of values of the basic constants and conversion factors of physics and chemistry recommended by the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) for international use. The 2010 adjustment takes into account the data considered in the 2006 adjustment as well as the data that became available from 1 January 2007, after the closing date of that adjustment, until 31 December 2010, the closing date of the new adjustment. Further, it describes in detail the adjustment of the values of the constants, including the selection of the final set of input data based on the results of least-squares analyses. The 2010 set replaces the previously recommended 2006 CODATA set and may also be found on the World Wide Web at physics.nist.gov/constants.
