TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine effective and ineffective leader behaviors from direct participant observations in several cases of a large multi-year cross-industry international research project to prove the hypothesis that effective team performance management requires strong transformational leadership.
Abstract: Purpose – Aims to examine effective and ineffective leader behaviors from direct participant observations in several cases of a large multiyear cross‐industry international research project to prove the hypothesis that effective team performance management requires strong transformational leadership.Design/methodology/approach – Transformational and charismatic leadership theories are briefly discussed from management science to explain how their principles can apply to and be analyzed in the project domain and other fields. Several popular and proven group leader behavior measurement constructs are discussed to show how they can be applied for assessing group leader behavior in any field. Two flexible taxonomies are built for assisting in quantitatively and qualitatively explaining stakeholder perceptions of group leader behaviors and team performance. Four theoretically sampled case studies are analyzed. The taxonomies are analyzed quantitatively and the results are qualitatively evaluated.Findings – Th...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an assignment that has been very successful in teaching students about leadership, situational analysis, and model and theory building, which has been one that students found enjoyable and enlightening relative to enhancing their understanding of leadership dynamics in both their professional and personal lives.
Abstract: In teaching and learning about leadership, instructors and students are faced with an extensive and, at times, very confusing body of literature that illustrates the complexity of the study, practice, and understanding of leadership. No single theory has been able to capture the essence of leadership and / or leadership dynamics. Students often become frustrated at the array and range of somewhat disparate and contradictory theories they encounter. Described within is an assignment that has been very successful in teaching students about leadership, situational analysis, and model and theory building. Moreover, this assignment has been one that students have found enjoyable and enlightening relative to enhancing their understanding of leadership dynamics in both their professional and personal lives.

TL;DR: The authors identified prominent leadership traits that contributed to women's successful election in California and discovered how intelligence, selfconfidence, determination, integrity, and sociability contribute to California women's success.
Abstract: This qualitative study identifies prominent leadership traits that contributed to women’s successful election in California. Moreover, this study discovers how intelligence, selfconfidence, determination, integrity, and sociability contribute to California women’s success. The research design was a qualitative narrative study. Women elected officials in local, state, and federal legislatures in California were the participants. The conceptual framework served as a basis for the purpose and research questions. Semi-structured questions were utilized to interview women elected officials in California to identify leadership traits that contributed to their successful election. Following an extensive literature review, an expert panel of researchers ascertained the validity of this research. Content analysis was applied to code key themes and a second reviewer established reliability. Research participants’ responses unveiled 5 themes that California women elected officials said contributed to their success: (a) it’s important to be knowledgeable and smart; (b) overcoming challenges, self-doubt, and belief; (c) determination is key; (d) integrity as a value; and (e) relating (relationships) to others, approachability, and connecting to people. These traits correlated to those noted by Northouse (2013) and served as this study’s conceptual framework. These traits will help with future studies on women’s participation in politics, and trait leadership theories. Additionally, scholars may use the traits this study identified to further research of women who seek to become elected officials. The findings from this study may also guide institutions that assist women leaders who aspire to become elected officials. In addition to this study being relevant for scholars, it may serve women intent on attaining leadership positions in government. Political parties and think tanks may utilize the
