TL;DR: Exposure to any childhood maltreatment, and childhood neglect in particular, predicted subsequent cannabis abuse with adjusted odds ratios (AORs) of 1.79 and 2.62, and the associations for an early age of onset of cannabis abuse and dependence were significant and consistent for maltreated children.

TL;DR: Although both males and females were at increased risk of child maltreatment in families where mothers were victimized by their male partners, male children were more likely to be emotionally maltreated and male offspring's physical abuse.

TL;DR: Child maltreatment is associated with both an increased onset and persistence of smoking from adolescence into young adulthood, which may have implications for smoking cessation programmes and early interventions for individual who have experienced maltreatment.
