TL;DR: In this article, the authors re-examine formal as well as motivational issues underlying the so-called liberal paradox and point out some concerns that are relevant in the formation of individual preferences in a society with interdependent lives.

TL;DR: This conference would seem to have two purposes as mentioned in this paper : 1) to remember the memory of a great economist who was also a personal friend of many of us here; and 2) to examine a very central issue in the theory and the practice of development: how does development happen?

TL;DR: The authors have published a collection of essays on social choice theory and welfare economics with the purpose of answering a "reply" to the essays included in this special number of essays. But it is not easy to respond adequately to such a rich collection of challenging ideas and contributions, nor to hide the fact that I am delighted and feel tremendously honoured.
