While the organization of the book is similar to previous editions, major emphasis has been placed on disorders that affect multiple organ systems. Important advances in genetics, immunology, and oncology are emphasized. Many chapters of the book have been rewritten and describe major advances in internal medicine. Subjects that received only a paragraph or two of attention in previous editions are now covered in entire chapters. Nanocrystals are fundamental to modern science and technology. Mastery over the shape of a nanocrystal enables control of its properties and enhancement of its usefulness for a given application. Our aim is to present a comprehensive review of current research activities that center on the shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanocrystals. We begin with a brief introduction to nucleation and growth within the context of metal nanocrystal synthesis, followed by a discussion of the possible shapes that a metal nanocrystal might take under different conditions. We then focus on a variety of experimental parameters that have been explored to manipulate the nucleation and growth of metal nanocrystals in solution-phase syntheses in an effort to generate specific shapes. We then elaborate on these approaches by selecting examples in which there is already reasonable understanding for the observed shape control or at least the protocols have proven to be reproducible and controllable. Finally, we highlight a number of applications that have been enabled and/or enhanced by the shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanocrystals. We conclude this article with personal perspectives on the directions toward which future research in this field might take.

Shape‐Controlled Synthesis of Metal Nanocrystals: Simple Chemistry Meets Complex Physics?

Butterflies are bright colored scaly winged insects of order Lepidoptera and one of the important species for conservation of invertebrates. A short-term survey was conducted for a period of one year within the agronomy field of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) campus in order to study the diversity of butterflies and their distribution among respective families, subfamilies and genera. During the course of survey, a total number of 48 species of butterflies belonging to 5 families, 13 sub families and 34 genera are recorded. It was observed that family Nymphalidae is the most dominating family in the study area representing 6 subfamilies, 15 genera and 21 species. Lowest number of butterflies are found in Hesperiidae family. Between these according to IUCN Stripped albatros, Grey pansy, Danaid eggfly, yalm fly are under very rare category. Rare species are angled castor, common sergent, common sailor.

A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial of N-Butyl Cyanoacrylate Glue Fixation Versus Tacker Fixation of Mesh in Endoscopic Totally Extraperitoneal Hernia Repair

Ginkgo biloba extract was evaluated for prophylactic value against renal ischemia-reperfusion induced oxidant stress in rat subjected to transient unilateral renal artery ligation. Oral Ginkgo biloba treatment (2mg/kg) was administered by different schedule before experimental induction of ischemia-reperfusion injury. Malondialdehyde has been taken as indicator for free radical damage produced by ischemia-reperfusion injury. Three hour pretreatment by the drug has most prominent inhibitory effect on consequent tissue and plasma malondialdehyde level of lipid peroxidation. Further, the relative inhibition of malondialdehyde level in tissue and plasma allow to infer drug effect on generation, but not the clearance of malondialdehyde. No significant difference of outcome from 1, 2 and 3 days treatment indicate no cumulation and thus safety in that respect. Ginkgo biloba treatment appears both effective and safe for prophylaxis of reperfusion injury following ischemia catastrophies.

Effect of Ginkgo biloba on Renal Ischemia-Reperfusion Induced Oxidant Stress in Rats

The present aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of catechin from faba beans on oxidative stress and glucose uptake in yeast cells. Flow cytometry approach indicated that 2-NBDG (1.98 ± 0.37) seed extract had a lower relative fluorescence signal than methanol (5.98 ± 0.67) and acetone seed extract (4.43 ± 0.55). In comparison to the control and seed extract, H2O2 exposure increased the apoptosis rate of yeast cells from 8.20% to 64.80%. Yeast cells incubated with H2O2 produced significantly more ROS intensity (162 ± 4.32, p < 0.05) than control cells (118 ± 2.52, p < 0.05) and less than seed extract-treated cells. Molecular dynamics simulation studies were performed for cat:α-amylase (catechin-α-amylase complex) which revealed the stable and mixed mode of inhibition during a simulation. The synergistic action of polyphenols or catechin present in seed extract may be responsible for the anti-oxidative stress and hypoglycaemic effects. The findings of this study may provide insight into the further development of a novel antidiabetic drug for T2DM. Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Catechin isolated from faba beans (Vicia faba L.): insights from oxidative stress and hypoglycemic effect in yeast cells through confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and in silico strategy.

Till date, different types of conventional drugs have been used to fight tumors. However, they have significant flaws, including their usage being constrained because of their low bioavailability, poor supply, and serious side effects. The modern combination therapy has been viewed as a potent strategy for treating serious illnesses, including cancer-type feared diseases. The nanoparticles are a promising choice for cancer therapeutic and diagnostic applications because of their fascinating optoelectronic and physicochemical features. Among the metallic nanoparticles, Zinc oxide nanoparticles possess interesting physicochemical and anti-cancer characteristics, such as ROS generation, high retention, enhanced permeability etc., making them attractive candidates for the treatment and diagnosis of cancer. Zinc oxide nanoparticles showed anti-cancer property via excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and by the destruction of mitochondrial membrane. Here, we have synthesized organic/inorganic hybrid nanosystem composed of chymotrypsin protein (Chymo) with AzureC (AzC) conjugated with Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs). The conjugation of AzureC with ZnONPs was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), zeta potential, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiment. The interaction of Chymo with AzC alone and AzC-ZnONPs was investigated, and it was observed that the interaction was enhanced in the presence of ZnONPs, which was concluded by the results obtained from different spectroscopic techniques such as UV-Visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and circular dichroism in combination with molecular docking. UV-Visible spectroscopic studies and the corresponding binding parameters showed that the binding of AzC-ZnONPs complex with Chymo is much higher than that of AzC alone. Moreover, the fluorescence measurement showed enhancement in static quenching during titration of Chymo with AzC-ZnONPs as compared to dye alone. In addition to this, circular dichroism results show that the dye and dye-NPs conjugate do not cause much structural change in α-Chymo. The molecular docking and thermodynamic studies showed the predominance of hydrogen bonding, Van der Waal force, and hydrophobic forces during the interactions. After correlation of all the data, interaction of Chymo with AzC-ZnONPs complex showed strong interaction as compared to dye alone. The moderate binding with chymo without any alteration in the structure makes it desirable for the distribution and pharmacokinetics. In addition, the in vitro cytotoxicity of the AzC-ZnONPs was demonstrated on A-549 adenocarcinoma cell line. Our findings from physiochemical investigations suggested that the chymotrypsin coated AzC conjugated ZnONPs could be used as the novel nanoconjugates for various cancer phototherapies.
