An energy-efficient SDN based sleep scheduling algorithm for WSNs

Ambient gas detection and measurement had become essential in diverse fields and applications, from preventing accidents, avoiding equipment malfunction, to air pollution warnings and granting the correct gas mixture to patients in hospitals. Gas leakage can reach large proportions, affecting entire neighborhoods or even cities, causing enormous environmental impacts. This paper elaborates on a deep review of the state of the art on gas-sensing technologies, analyzing the opportunities and main characteristics of the transducers, as well as towards their integration through the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm. This should ease the information collecting and sharing processes, granting better experiences to users, and avoiding major losses and expenses. The most promising wireless-based solutions for ambient gas monitoring are analyzed and discussed, open research topics are identified, and lessons learned are shared to conclude the study.

IoT-Enabled Gas Sensors: Technologies, Applications, and Opportunities

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) belong to emerging technologies where network devices can interact with the surrounding environment by sensing physical parameters. Recently, with the dissemination of mobile devices to Internet connectivity, users can interact with sensor networks and collect environmental data, anytime, anywhere using user-friendly mobile applications. Following the Internet of Things vision, the integration of all sorts of Internet-based devices is considered a big challenge. New infrastructures are required in order to interconnect these devices independently of the used technologies. This paper proposes a model for WSNs monitoring based on a REST Web service and XML messages to provide a mobile ubiquitous approach for WSN monitoring. Data collected from a WSN is stored in a database. Then, mobile clients send XML based messages to a HTTP server through a well-defined REST interface, requesting WSN collected data. A WSN laboratory test bed was used to perform the evaluation, demonstration, and validation of the proposed model. Results show that proposed solution is able to collect and present data in a mobile environment, and it is ready for use.

A Ubiquitous Model for Wireless Sensor Networks Monitoring

Wireless Sensor Networks WSNs belongs to a new trend in technology in which tiny and resource constrained devices are wirelessly interconnected and are able to interact with the surrounding environment by collecting data such as temperature and humidity. Recently, due to the huge growth in the use of mobile devices with Internet connection, smartphones are becoming the center of future ubiquitous wireless networks. Interconnecting WSNs with smartphones and the Internet is a big challenge and new architectures are required due to the heterogeneity of these devices. Taking into account that people are using smartphones with Internet connection, there is a good opportunity to propose a new architecture for wireless sensors monitoring using push notifications and smartphones. Then, this paper proposes a ubiquitous approach for WSN monitoring based on a REST Web Service, a relational database, and an Android mobile application. Real-time data sensed by WSNs are sent directly to a smartphone or stored in a database and requested by the mobile application using a well-defined RESTful interface. A push notification system was created in order to alert mobile users when a sensor parameter overcomes a given threshold. The proposed architecture and mobile application were evaluated and validated using a laboratory WSN testbed and are ready for use.

Ubiquitous monitoring solution for Wireless Sensor Networks with push notifications and end-to-end connectivity

The wireless sensor networks (WSNs) concept was appeared in the middle of 90s and have been a subject under intensive research in the past few years. Several factors have contributed to this, but the potential for application of WSNs in almost every aspect of day-to-day life is the predominant one. This type of networks has been developed using proprietary solutions instead of standard solutions. More recently, the importance of standards motivated the use of IETF standards in WSNs, making the Internet integration easier. However, more efforts are necessary in order to provide a full integration. The WSNs use mainly IPv6 protocol, but the IPv4 is the predominant one in the Internet. As a consequence, IPv4 to IPv6 transition mechanisms must be provided to allow the interaction between all Internet connected devices independently of the supported IP version. It is also critical to provide a standard application interface to make easier the application development and independently of the hardware platform used. The RESTfull Web services can provide this standard interface. So, combine RESTfull Web services with IPv4 to IPv6 transition mechanisms can increase the WSN services dissemination. The transition mechanisms and the REST Web services are supported in the gateway in order to save the wireless sensor device resources'. The smartphone with Internet connectivity can also be the drive to the WSNs growth, because user-friendly applications can be used to retrieve and collect sensed data. This paper proposes a solution based on REST web services to permit the interaction between a mobile application and the IPv6 compliant WSN.

Dual stack mechanisms are supported in order to accept requests from both IPv4 and IPv6 mobile devices. A WSN laboratory testbed was deployed to perform the validation and demonstration of the proposed solution.

IPv4/IPv6 transition mechanisms for ubiquitous wireless sensor networks monitoring

Wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSAN) are composed of small smart nodes with sensing and/or actuating capabilities, and one or more sinks that help achieve the network’s goals. Although IPv6, with the 6LoWPAN specification, is readily available for sensor networks, deployments still employ dedicated routing and transport protocols. Moreover, Internet connectivity, automatic node attachment, and mobile access to data are sometimes overlooked. This paper extends the ZenSens user-oriented system architecture, introducing actuation support, and a novel mobile iPhone application. ZenSens features Plug-and-Play node attachment and operation, testbed with nodes running Contiki with IPv6 support, and World Wide Web access. As a result, ZenSens brings the power of WSAN to users without technological background. The system is presented, namely node firmware and Desktop software, together with iPhone native application, and Web access. With ZenSens data is accessible everywhere, thus turning sensor and actuator networks into ubiquitously accessible systems.
