Abstract: Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21), a novel metabolic factor in obesity and fasting metabolism, has been shown to be regulated by supraphysiological levels of free fatty acids (FFAs) under hyperinsulinemic conditions. Interestingly, it is still unclear whether the observed effects of FFAs on FGF-21 are relevant under physiological conditions, and the relative functions of FFAs and insulin within this context also need to be determined. Fourteen healthy men were studied in a randomized controlled crossover trial (RCT) using lipid heparin infusion (LHI) at a dose inducing physiological elevations of FFAs vs. saline heparin infusion. In a second randomized controlled trial, FGF-21 was analyzed in 14 patients with type 1 diabetes (6 men, 8 women) during continuous insulin supply vs. discontinued insulin infusion and subsequently increased lipolysis and ketosis. Circulating FGF-21 increased during physiologically elevated FFAs induced by LHI, which was accompanied by mild hyperinsulinemia. Interestingly, a mild elevation of FFAs resulting from complete insulin deficiency also increased FGF-21 levels. These results from two independent human RCTs suggest that FFAs increase circulating FGF-21, while insulin is only of minor importance under physiological conditions. This mechanism might explain the apparent paradox of increased FGF-21 levels in obesity, insulin resistance, and starvation.

Abstract: A measurement of the differential cross sections for a W boson produced in association with jets in the muon decay channel is presented. The measurement is based on 13 TeV proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.2 fb(-1), recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The cross sections are reported as functions of jet multiplicity, jet transverse momentum pT, jet rapidity, the scalar pT sum of the jets, and angular correlations between the muon and each jet for different jet multiplicities. The measured cross sections are in agreement with predictions that include multileg leading-order (LO) and next-to-LO matrix element calculations interfaced with parton showers, as well as a next-to-next-to-LO calculation for the W boson and one jet production.

Abstract: A search for low mass narrow vector resonances decaying into quark-antiquark pairs is presented The analysis is based on data collected in 2017 with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 411 fb-1 The results of this analysis are combined with those of an earlier analysis based on data collected at the same collision energy in 2016, corresponding to 359 fb-1 Signal candidates will be recoiling against initial state radiation and are identified as energetic, large-radius jets with two pronged substructure The invariant jet mass spectrum is probed for a potential narrow peaking signal over a smoothly falling background No evidence for such resonances is observed within the mass range of 50–450 GeV Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the coupling of narrow resonances to quarks, as a function of the resonance mass For masses between 50 and 300 GeV these are the most sensitive limits to date This analysis extends the earlier search to a mass range of 300–450 GeV, which is probed for the first time with jet substructure techniques

Abstract: A study of dijet production in proton-proton collisions was performed at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV for jets with pt > 35 GeV and abs(y) < 4.7 using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2010. Events with at least one pair of jets are denoted as "inclusive". Events with exactly one pair of jets are called "exclusive". The ratio of the cross section of all pairwise combinations of jets to the exclusive dijet cross section as a function of the rapidity difference between jets abs(Delta(y)) is measured for the first time up to abs(Delta(y)) = 9.2. The ratio of the cross section for the pair consisting of the most forward and the most backward jet from the inclusive sample to the exclusive dijet cross section is also presented. The predictions of the Monte Carlo event generators PYTHIA6 and PYTHIA8 agree with the measurements. In both ratios the HERWIG++ generator exhibits a more pronounced rise versus abs(Delta(y)) than observed in the data. The BFKL-motivated generators CASCADE and HEJ+ARIADNE predict for these ratios a significantly stronger rise than observed.

Abstract: Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING DIABETES CARE D iabetes is a chronic illness that requires continuing medical care and patient self-management education to prevent acute complications and to reduce the risk of long-term complications. Diabetes care is complex and requires that many issues, beyond glycemic control, be addressed. A large body of evidence exists that supports a range of interventions to improve diabetes outcomes. These standards of care are intended to provide clinicians, patients, researchers, payors, and other interested individuals with the components of diabetes care, treatment goals, and tools to evaluate the quality of care. While individual preferences, comorbidities, and other patient factors may require modification of goals, targets that are desirable for most patients with diabetes are provided. These standards are not intended to preclude more extensive evaluation and management of the patient by other specialists as needed. For more detailed information, refer to Bode (Ed.): Medical Management of Type 1 Diabetes (1), Burant (Ed): Medical Management of Type 2 Diabetes (2), and Klingensmith (Ed): Intensive Diabetes Management (3). The recommendations included are diagnostic and therapeutic actions that are known or believed to favorably affect health outcomes of patients with diabetes. A grading system (Table 1), developed by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and modeled after existing methods, was utilized to clarify and codify the evidence that forms the basis for the recommendations. The level of evidence that supports each recommendation is listed after each recommendation using the letters A, B, C, or E.
