TL;DR: In this article, the authors read Janice Galloway's debut novel as displaying an intimate and sensitive relationship to everyday objects and language as means for coping with tragedy and depression, and argued that the notion of the body-as-object can be a useful way of thinking about self within space and should not be dismissed as a category inferior, and therefore subordinate, to subject.
Abstract: Deploying a phenomenological perspective, this essay reads Janice Galloway's debut novel as displaying an intimate and sensitive relationship to everyday objects and language as means for coping with tragedy and depression. It also argues that the notion of the body-as-object can be a useful way of thinking about self within space and should not be dismissed as a category inferior, and therefore subordinate, to “subject”—a view often proffered by feminist criticism.
