TL;DR: In this article, a semi-structured interview was conducted with each teacher, individually, in the school itself and was based on some guiding questions, revealing the lack of knowledge of literacy teachers on dyslexia, despite having undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as that of teachers who participated in training offered by the municipal education network.
Abstract: Objective: to describe the knowledge of elementary school teachers on child dyslexia. Methods: 10 teachers from the 1st to the 5th year of elementary education in public schools in the municipality of Abreu e Lima, Pernambuco, Brazil, participated in the study. A semi-structured interview was conducted with each teacher, individually, in the school itself and was based on some guiding questions. Results: content analysis allowed the identification of three thematic categories: 1. Teacher training does not address dyslexia; 2. Feelings and difficulties of the literacy teacher facing the challenges of literacy; 3. Lack of knowledge about dyslexia: school management of possibly dyslexic children. Conclusion: the research revealed the lack of knowledge of literacy teachers on dyslexia, despite having undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as that of teachers who participated in training offered by the municipal education network.

TL;DR: This paper investigated a contribuicao da consciencia fonologica e nomeacao seriada rapida for a aprendizagem inicial da escrita.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the relationship between phonological awareness and phonological development in children of public and private schools, and found a negative correlation between some phonological process and metalinguistic skills.
Abstract: PURPOSE: to investigate the relationship between phonological awareness and phonological development in children of public and private schools. METHOD: the study included 120 children, of both sexes, aged from two to six years and eleven months old, in 60 private schools and 60 public schools in the Metropolitan Area of Recife. It was used as assessment tools the Proof of Phonological Evaluation and the Test of Phonological Awareness. The children's caretakers also answered a psychosocial questionnaire. The phonological assessment data were transcribed according to IPA International Phonetic Alphabet and analyzed according to the theory of phonological processes. RESULTS: initial analysis did not reveal significant differences between students in public and private schools, as well as between genders. Phonological processes frequently were: simplification of consonant cluster, simplifying of net and simplifying final consonant. A difference was observed between the ages of eliminating some processes in relation to the description of the literature, which possibly reflects the influence of linguistic variety. Regarding phonological awareness, was verified a development because of the advance in age. It was observed a negative correlation between some phonological process and metalinguistic skills. CONCLUSION: the type of schooling, singly, was not a variable that has influenced the development of metalinguistic skills and phonological system. These skills were developed in parallel and they are related to phonological development. It is necessary that further studies be conducted to better understand the relationship between metalinguistic skills and oral language development.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study was conducted to characterize the linguistic-cognitive performance of schoolchildren in the literacy cycle, in order to identify children at risk for learning disorders in the public school context.
Abstract: Objective: to characterize the linguistic-cognitive performance of schoolchildren in the literacy cycle, in order to identify children at risk for learning disorders in the public school context Methods: this study involved 88 children, aged 6 to 8 years, enrolled in the first, second and third year of elementary education I, from two schools in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil The procedure used was the Cognitive-Linguistic Skills Evaluation Protocol, which has collective and individual versions, both being applied The analysis of the groups was performed through the statistical non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test with p <005 Results: all students were submitted to the individual version for presenting poor performance in the collective version of the protocol Thus, the application of the collective version was not sufficient to identify children at risk for learning disorders, thus, the indication of the individual assessment In the individual version, students from the 1st year showed a lower performance in most of the subtests that make up the instrument, whereas those from the 2nd and 3rd years had an average performance, which also deserves attention, according to the instrument of evaluation These results, below the one expected for the age and school year, may be a consequence of poor learning opportunities within and outside school There were also significant differences as a function of the schooling advance, revealing that the cognitive-linguistic skills, precursors of the reading and writing learning process, are only having a greater leap of development at the end of the literacy cycle, in the third year, which reveals a significant delay in terms of learning Conclusion: the low performance observed in cognitive-linguistic abilities in schoolchildren hinders the early identification of children at risk for learning disorders and questions the quality of educational opportunities experienced by the students inside and outside the public school Other factors, such as regional differences in language and linguistic context, need to be considered in the interpretation of tests that evaluate cognitive-linguistic abilities

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors highlighted the contribution of both contexts to human development promotion, emphasizing their implications on evolutionary processes, and discussed the issues about family links, configurations, and the importance of the social support network for family development.
Abstract: School and family constitute two developmental contexts essential for the lifespan trajectories. In this article, it is highlighted the contribution of both contexts to human development promotion, emphasizing their implications on evolutionary processes. The issues about family links, configurations, and the importance of the social support network for family development are discussed. The school functions are focused considering their influences on developing persons. Considerations are also made about the necessity of understanding the inter-relations between the school and the family, aiming to promote learning and human development. The integration between these two contexts is a challenge for both the professional practice and the empirical research.

TL;DR: The authors investigated the relationship between rapid serial naming and phoneme awareness, and reading and spelling ability, and found that rapid serial names are particularly important for the development of the ability to read by phonological recoding.
Abstract: The study investigates the relationship between rapid serial naming and phoneme awareness, and reading and spelling ability. Participants were 146 North-American children and adolescents varying in age from seven to 18 years. Approximately half of the participants (N = 71) had reading difficulties. The results suggest that rapid serial naming contributes variation to reading and spelling ability that is independent of the contribution of phoneme awareness. However, relative to this skill, rapid serial naming makes a rather modest contribution to learning to read and spell in an alphabetic writing system. Further analyses suggested that rapid serial naming is particularly important for the development of the ability to read texts rapidly and accurately, whereas phoneme awareness is particularly important for the development of the ability to read by phonological recoding, that is, by translating letters or group of letters into their phonological codes. Finally, there was little indication that the role played by either phoneme awareness or rapid serial naming interacts with age or reading ability

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a trabalho apresentado by PET-Pedagogia, a group of pedagogias at the University of Atencao.
