Journal ArticleDOI
The biogeochemistry and microbiology of sulfidic mine waste and bioleaching dumps and heaps, and novel Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria
TL;DR: The microbiology and the relevant biogeochemical processes in the dumps and heaps are reviewed and have to be understood for improving copper heap leaching operations and to develop and control countermeasures for the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD).
Journal ArticleDOI
Microorganisms persist at record depths in the subseafloor of the Canterbury Basin.
Maria Cristina Ciobanu,Maria Cristina Ciobanu,Maria Cristina Ciobanu,Gaëtan Burgaud,Alexis Dufresne,Anja Breuker,Vanessa Rédou,Sarah Ben Maamar,F. Gaboyer,F. Gaboyer,F. Gaboyer,Odile Vandenabeele-Trambouze,Odile Vandenabeele-Trambouze,Odile Vandenabeele-Trambouze,Julius S. Lipp,Axel Schippers,Philippe Vandenkoornhuyse,Georges Barbier,Mohamed Jebbar,Mohamed Jebbar,Mohamed Jebbar,Anne Godfroy,Anne Godfroy,Anne Godfroy,Karine Alain,Karine Alain,Karine Alain +26 more
TL;DR: It is shown that not only Bacteria and Archaea but also Eukarya occur at record depths in the subseafloor of the Canterbury Basin, and shifts in microbial community composition along a core of nearly 2 km reflect vertical taxa zonation influenced by sediment depth.
Journal ArticleDOI
IODP Expedition 331: Strong and Expansive Subseafloor Hydrothermal Activities in the Okinawa Trough
Ken Takai,Michael J. Mottl,Simon Harder Holm Nielsen,J. L. Birrien,S. Bowden,Leah Brandt,Anja Breuker,Juan Carlos Corona,S. Eckert,Hilairy E. Hartnett,Steven P. Hollis,Christopher H. House,Akira Ijiri,Jun-ichiro Ishibashi,Yuka Masaki,Sean M. McAllister,James McManus,Craig L. Moyer,Manabu Nishizawa,Takuro Noguchi,Takuro Nunoura,Gordon Southam,Katsunori Yanagawa,S. Yang,C.J. Yeats +24 more
TL;DR: The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 331 as mentioned in this paper used a steel mesh platform with valve controls for post-cruise sampling of fluids to investigate active subseafloor microbial ecosystems and their physical and chemical settings.
Journal ArticleDOI
Microbial community analysis of deeply buried marine sediments of the New Jersey shallow shelf (IODP Expedition 313).
TL;DR: The investigated deeply buried marine sediments of the shallow shelf off New Jersey, USA, are characterized by low organic carbon content and total cell counts of < 10(7) cells per mL sediment, and MCG was the dominant group with a high diversity of the isolated 16S rRNA gene sequences.
Journal ArticleDOI
The first microbiological contamination assessment by deep-sea drilling and coring by the D/V Chikyu at the Iheya North hydrothermal field in the Mid-Okinawa Trough (IODP Expedition 331)
Katsunori Yanagawa,Katsunori Yanagawa,Takuro Nunoura,Sean M. McAllister,Miho Hirai,Anja Breuker,Leah Brandt,Christopher H. House,Craig L. Moyer,Jean Louis Birrien,Kan Aoike,Michinari Sunamura,Tetsuro Urabe,Michael J. Mottl,Ken Takai +14 more
TL;DR: A constructive approach for evaluation and eliminating microbial contamination during riser-less drilling and coring operations by the D/V Chikyu is suggested.
