ResumenEn este estudio se evaluo el perfil de los adolescentes que ejercen violencia fisica y verbal contra sus progenitores. Participaron 1427 adolescentes (728 chicas, 682 chicos) que contestaron numerosas medidas personales y ambientales. Los resultados mostraron que mientras que las agresiones verbales menos severas, como chillar a los progenitores, ocurren en el 65.8% de los casos, las agresiones fisicas son mucho menos frecuentes (7.2%). La violencia contra los progenitores se asocia a exposicion a la violencia familiar, baja disciplina ejercida por los progenitores, amigos con problemas de conducta, sintomas de depresion, conducta delincuente, consumo de drogas, impulsividad, creencias justificadoras de la violencia y de grandiosidad. Los chicos ejercen mas la violencia fisica mientras que las chicas ejercen mas actos de violencia verbal. Por ultimo, las madres sufren mas actos de violencia verbal que los padres.

Violencia filio-parental en la adolescencia: características ambientales y personales

Los objetivos de este estudio fueron: a) analizar la relacion entre la exposicion a diferentes tipos de violencia en la familia (agresion entre los padres y agresion de padres a hijos) y la perpetracion de conductas de violencia fi lioparental (VFP); b) examinar las posibles diferencias en funcion del sexo de los hijos en las relaciones especifi cadas. Para ello, se empleo una muestra de 1.681 universitarios (74,7% mujeres) que informaron sobre su exposicion a diferentes experiencias de violencia intrafamiliar durante su infancia. Cada tipo de violencia, psicologica y fisica, fue analizada por separado. Los resultados mostraron que tanto la exposicion a la agresion psicologica entre los padres como la agresion psicologica de padres a hijos se asociaron con una mayor frecuencia de VFP psicologica. Por otra parte, la agresion psicologica y fisica de padres a hijos, asi como la exposicion a la agresion fisica entre los padres se relacionaron con una mayor VFP fisica. No se encontraron diferencias por sexos en las relaciones entre las variables, lo cual sugiere que la relacion entre la exposicion a la violencia intrafamiliar y la VFP es similar para varones y mujeres. Child-to-parent violence and its association with exposure to marital violence and parent-to-child violence. The aims of this study were: (a) to examine the relationships between the exposure to different types of family violence (intraparental violence and parent-to-child aggression) and the perpetration of child-to-parent violence (CPV); (b) to analyze sex differences in the relationships specifi ed. The sample comprised 1681 Spanish university students who reported the exposure to different types of family violence during their childhood. Both psychological and physical family violence were analyzed separately. Results showed that both witnessing marital psychological violence and parent-to-child psychological aggression are related to CPV. Furthermore, psychological and physical parent-to-child aggression as well as witnessing physical aggression between parents was associated with physical CPV. Multigroup analyses showed that the relationships among variables were not signifi cantly different as a function of sex. This fi nding suggests that the relation between exposure to family violence and CPV is similar for men and women.

Violencia filioparental y su asociación con la exposición a la violencia marital y la agresión de padres a hijos

Title: To what extent is child-to-parent violence bi-directional?. Abstract: Child-to-parent violence is a family problem that has remained obscured for decades. The main purpose of this study was to explore gender differences in victims and perpetrators of child-to-parent violence. The importance of intra-family violence in the development of this type of violent behavior was also studied. The sample comprised 485 adolescents from the province of Gipuzkoa (Spain), of both sexes, taken from 9 schools and aged 12 to 18. As found in many previous studies, sons were more likely to be perpetrators of physical abuse than daughters. Although mothers suffered more psychological and emotional abuse than fathers, there were no differences between mothers and fathers with regard to physical abuse from their children. The hypothesis of the bi-directionality of violence was confirmed for physical violence in the male group that battered their parents. Similarly, marital violence (violence between par- ents) was a predictor of the three types of child-to-parent abusive behav- iours (physical, psychological and emotional) for the male group. This study explored the characteristics of child-to-parent violence (CPV) in Spain based on the narrations of adolescents who perpetrate this kind of violence, their parents, and the professionals who work in this area A qualitative design was used Focus groups were asked about the risk factors associated with CPV, such as exposure to family violence, discipline, and psychological characteristics of the adolescents Interviews were videotaped, transcribed, and reviewed independently by each investigator to identify and group distinct comments into categories with specific themes Results suggest that CPV is mainly linked to exposure to marital conflict and family violence, permissive discipline, emotional disengagement in the father-child relationship, and symptoms of emotional stress and substance consumption in the children Lastly, acts of CPV seem to be an attempt by the children to gain power in the context of family relations in which the parents display their incapacity to establish control As several family and personal characteristics appear to be involved in CPV, it is recommended that family and individual approaches be considered for treatment

Child-to-Parent Violence in Adolescents: The Perspectives of the Parents, Children, and Professionals in a Sample of Spanish Focus Group Participants

The aim of the present study was to explore the psychosocial profile of juveniles reported for violent behaviours against their parents, as well as the extent to which the phenomenon of violence against parents (VAP) can be explained by the hypothesis of the bi- directionality of intra-family violence. For this purpose we selected a sample of 103 juveniles classified in three groups -(a) VAP offences, (b) VAP offences and other types of offence, and (c) other offences. In total we analyzed 413 files from the office of the Public Prosecutor for Juveniles in Bilbao (Basque Country, northern Spain). We extracted personal, family context and judicial variables for the juveniles. The results suggest the existence of a specific profile of juveniles reported for VAP, and also show that through the hypothesis of the bi- directionality of intra-family violence it is possible to explain one-third of the cases analyzed.
