In the late nineteenth century, in an age of ascendant racism and imperial expansion, there emerged in Cuba a movement that unified black, mulatto, and white men in an attack on Europe's oldest empire, with the goal of creating a nation explicitly defined as antiracist. This book tells the story of the thirty-year unfolding and undoing of that movement. Ada Ferrer examines the participation of black and mulatto Cubans in nationalist insurgency from 1868, when a slaveholder began the revolution by freeing his slaves, until the intervention of racially segregated American forces in 1898. In so doing, she uncovers the struggles over the boundaries of citizenship and nationality that their participation brought to the fore, and she shows that even as black participation helped sustain the movement ideologically and militarily, it simultaneously prompted accusations of race war and fed the forces of counterinsurgency. Carefully examining the tensions between racism and antiracism contained within Cuban nationalism, Ferrer paints a dynamic portrait of a movement built upon the coexistence of an ideology of racial fraternity and the persistence of presumptions of hierarchy. |Examines the tensions between racism and anti-racism in Cuba's struggle to become a nation between 1868 and 1898.

Converting Spanish Hispaniola: Race, Nation, and the A.M.E. Church in Santo Domingo, 1872-1904

In We Dream Together Anne Eller breaks with dominant narratives of conflict between the Dominican Republic and Haiti by tracing the complicated history of Dominican emancipation and independence between 1822 and 1865. Eller moves beyond the small body of writing by Dominican elites that often narrates Dominican nationhood to craft inclusive, popular histories of identity, community, and freedom, summoning sources that range from trial records and consul reports to poetry and song. Rethinking Dominican relationships with their communities, the national project, and the greater Caribbean, Eller shows how popular anticolonial resistance was anchored in a rich and complex political culture. Haitians and Dominicans fostered a common commitment to Caribbean freedom, the abolition of slavery, and popular democracy, often well beyond the reach of the state. By showing how the island's political roots are deeply entwined, and by contextualizing this history within the wider Atlantic world, Eller demonstrates the centrality of Dominican anticolonial struggles for understanding independence and emancipation throughout the Caribbean and the Americas.

We Dream Together: Dominican Independence, Haiti, and the Fight for Caribbean Freedom

Historiography of the nineteenth-century Caribbean often holds Santo Domingo (later, the Dominican Republic) to be something of an anomaly. This essay reconsiders that scholarship in a Pan-Caribbean frame, demonstrating how such a characterization can lead to a number of distortions. First, it allows projections of elite Dominican nationalism to serve as synecdoche for popular thought. Second, privileging this anxious and divisive rhetoric forecloses study of the nation as an emancipated state, together with Haiti, in a hostile Atlantic. Common Dominicans had a keen sense of this regional context, as demonstrated by popular unrest in the 1850s and 1860s. In the absence of plantation records or other prolific documentation, scholarship has often rested on the testimony of foreign observers; these sources demand further critical attention. Creative research that pointedly seeks out popular thought promises to elucidate connections across the island as well as ties to networks and neighbors throughout the Caribbean.

This article explores the colony of Santo Domingo just after it had passed from French back to Spanish hands in 1809. Although impoverished and at the very margins of the Caribbean plantation system, revolutionary winds were nonetheless buffeting the colony. Using the testimony of a failed 1810 conspiracy known as the “Italian Revolution”, the article explores the enduring inequalities present in Santo Domingo, the immediate influence of the Haiti to the west, and the beginnings of Latin American independence more generally. Whereas Spanish authorities and other Caribbean elites might have dismissed the colony as marginal to the political events, therefore, the conspiracy sheds light on its importance to subaltern travelers and migrants from neighboring islands. Finally, it shows the tremendous concrete and symbolic importance of the Haitian Revolution on the neighboring colony, complicating a historiography that often argues for conflict, and not interrelation, between the two sides of Hispaniola.

“All would be equal in the effort”: Santo Domingo's “Italian Revolution”, Independence, and Haiti, 1809-1822

This article considers two key moments in the Dominican War of Restoration (1863-1865), fought against the Spanish reoccupation of the territory after annexation in 1861. The course of the fighting demonstrates how residents of the former republic had a keen sense of regional context. Specifically, Dominicans were acutely conscious of the ongoing threat of slavery that surrounded them and the attacks and reversals of the period in general. Documents reveal that memory of the institution also persisted in the territory itself. New archival research promises to reveal more about popular thought of the era, as well as bonds of connection to citizens (and institutions) in Haiti. The War of Restoration is an example of these connections, exhibiting ideologies of political federation whose roots extend to the beginning of the century. It is a story that connects the radicalism of pan-Caribbean visions of the period of the Haitian Revolution and continental independence to movements at the end of the nineteenth-century and beyond. Resumen: Este articulo considera dos momentos claves de la Guerra de la Restauracion dominicana (1863-1865), en la cual se combatio una reocupacion espanola luego de la anexion en 1861. El curso de la lucha anticolonial demuestra que en la extinguida republica existia una consciencia aguda del contexto regional. Especificamente, los dominicanos estaban muy conscientes de la amenaza de la esclavitud aun vigente en su entorno y de los ataques y reveses del periodo en general. La documentacion existente revela tambien una memoria de la institucion que perduraba en el territorio mismo. Nuevos trabajos archivisticos prometen revelar mas sobre el pensamiento popular del periodo y tambien sobre las relaciones colaborativas que existian con ciudadanos (e instituciones) en Haiti. La Guerra de la Restauracion es ejemplo de estas conexiones, revelando ideologias de federacion politica cuyas raices se extienden hasta principios de siglo. Es una historia que conecta el radicalismo de las visiones pan-caribenas de la epoca de la revolucion haitiana e independencia continental a los movimientos del fin del siglo y mas alla. Resume: Cet article examine deux moments-cles de la Guerre de la Restauration dominicaine (1863-1865), dans laquelle les Dominicains ont lutte contre la reoccupation espagnole obtenue a travers l’offre d’annexion de 1861. Cette periode de lutte anticoloniale prouve l’existence d’une conscience aigue des Dominicains, du contexte regional sous la republique. Ils etaient tres conscients de la menace de l’esclavage qui planait sur leur pays durant cette epoque. Les documents revelent egalement qu’une memoire de l’institution existait deja depuis longtemps. De nouveaux travaux d’archives promettent d’apporter plus d’informations sur la pensee populaire de l’epoque, ainsi que sur les collaborations entre les citoyens et les institutions haitiennes. La Guerre de la Restauration est un exemple des idees de federation politique existantes depuis le debut du siecle. C’est une histoire qui relie le mouvement radical des visions pan-caribeennes de l’epoque de la Revolution haitienne et des soulevements de l’independance sur le continent aux autres mouvements datant de la fin du XIXe siecle et au-dela.
