We use radar observations from the Jicamarca Observatory from 1968 to 1992 to study the effects of the F region vertical plasma drift velocity on the generation and evolution of equatorial spread F The dependence of these irregularities on season, solar cycle, and magnetic activity can be explained as resulting from the corresponding effects on the evening and nighttime vertical drifts In the early night sector, the bottomside of the F layer is almost always unstable The evolution of the unstable layer is controlled by the history of the vertical drift velocity When the drift velocities are large enough, the necessary seeding mechanisms for the generation of strong spread F always appear to be present The threshold drift velocity for the generation of strong early night irregularities increases linearly with solar flux The geomagnetic control on the generation of spread F is season, solar cycle, and longitude dependent These effects can be explained by the response of the equatorial vertical drift velocities to magnetospheric and ionospheric disturbance dynamo electric fields The occurrence of early night spread F decreases significantly during equinox solar maximum magnetically disturbed conditions due to disturbance dynamo electric fields which decrease the upward drift velocities near sunset The generation of late night spread F requires the reversal of the vertical velocity from downward to upward for periods longer than about half an hour These irregularities occur most often at ∼0400 local time when the prompt penetration and disturbance dynamo vertical drifts have largest amplitudes The occurrence of late night spread F is highest near solar minimum and decreases with increasing solar activity probably due to the large increase of the nighttime downward drifts with increasing solar flux

Effects of the vertical plasma drift velocity on the generation and evolution of equatorial spread F

In a test of the generally accepted Rayleigh-Taylor (R-T) instability mechanism for equatorial spread F (ESF) a linear instability growth rate γ RT is derived following the formalism of Haerendel (preprint, 1973) which takes into account the variations of physical parameters along geomagnetic flux tubes. The resulting form of γ RT extends the results of previous work by including direct dependencies on transequatorial neutral winds, zonal electric fields, vertical and horizontal ionospheric density gradients, the presence of an E region, and chemical recombination. Realistic atmospheric and ionospheric density model inputs are used for the first time to make quantitative calculations of R-T growth rates for a range of geophysical conditions. The key result of this study is that time/altitude domains having positive calculated instability growth rates are found to coincide with observed time/altitude patterns of ESF occurrence over both a monthly and a yearly time frame. This success in being able to model the climatological occurrence of ESF lends support to the physical model adopted for the instability mechanism and opens up new avenues of research into ESF predictability on a night-to-night and even an hour-to-hour basis.

Linear theory and modeling of the Rayleigh‐Taylor instability leading to the occurrence of equatorial spread F

An enigma of equatorial research has been the observed seasonal and longitudinal occurrence patterns of equatorial scintillations (and range-type spread F). We resolve this problem by showing that the seasonal maxima in scintillation activity coincide with the times of year when the solar terminator is most nearly aligned with the geomagnetic flux tubes. That is, occurrence of plasma density irregularities responsible for scintillations is most likely when the integrated E-region Pedersen conductivity is changing most rapidly. Hence the hitherto puzzling seasonal pattern of scintillation activity, at a given longitude, becomes a simple deterministic function of the magnetic declination and geographic latitude of the magnetic dip equator. This demonstrated relationship is consistent with equatorial irregularity generation by the collisional Rayleigh-Taylor instability and irregularity growth enhancement by the current convective and (wind-driven) gradient drift instabilities. Some discrepancies in this relationship, however, have been found in scintillation data obtained at lower radio frequencies (below, say, 300 MHz) that suggest the presence of other irregularity-influencing processes. The role of field-aligned currents, associated with the longitudinal gradient in integrated E-region Pedersen conductivity produced at the solar terminator, in equatorial irregularity generation via the current convective instability has not been discussed previously.

Control of the seasonal and longitudinal occurrence of equatorial scintillations by the longitudinal gradient in integrated E region Pedersen conductivity

The most intense, F region irregularities in the high-latitude ionosphere appear to be produced by convective plasma processes and in particular, by the fluid (gradient drift) interchange instability. Such irregularities are produced by convectively mixing plasma across a mean plasma density gradient with the transport of higher-density plasma into regions of lower-density plasma (and vice versa) leading to the development of an irregularity spectrum that extends in scale from about 10 km down to the ion gyroradius. The mean plasma density gradient that must be present to allow irregularity production by this interchange process appears to be associated with larger-scale (>10 km) plasma structure produced by other means. Because much of the recent progress on this research topic stems from this recognition, a significant portion of this review is dedicated to a description of the characteristics and processes of 10-km plasma structure and their relationships to those of smaller-scale irregularities. From this review, we synthesize a descriptive model of plasma structures in the high-latitude F layer that unifies most of the diverse and independent observations. For the large-scale plasma processes, the model includes (1) the formation of 1000-km-scale “patches” in the polar cap from solar-produced plasma that is transported poleward from lower latitudes; (2) the reconfiguration of patches as they convect into the auroral region and become the latitudinally confined, but longitudinally extended, plasma density enhancements near the equatorward auroral boundary; and (3) the production of localized enhancements and depletions along the poleward auroral boundary by soft-particle precipitation and large but localized electric fields. In the model, the most intense, smaller-scale irregularities are in spatial proximity to these large-scale plasma features, the implication being that the presence of the latter allows formation of the former. The irregularity characteristics are consistent with production by the instability and a morphology controlled by (1) a “slip” velocity (i.e., plasma drift relative to the neutral gas) that is moderately small except in regions of nonuniform plasma convection or under time-varying conditions (e.g., substorms, pulsation events) and (2) a highly conducting auroral E layer that damps irregularity growth and enhances decay. The final irregularity spectrum appears to be produced by (1) global convective processes acting on solar-produced plasma at the largest scales (>50 km), (2) particle precipitation at scales greater than 10 km, (3) perhaps some form of wave activity around 10 km, and (4) the instability at the smaller scales (<10 km).

High-Latitude F-Region Irregularities: A Review and Synthesis

The Atmosphere Explorer satellite observed large-scale (10 to 200-km) irregular biteouts of up to three orders of magnitude in the ion concentration in the nighttime equatorial F region associated with small-scale inhomogeneities in the ion concentration. Simultaneous plasma velocity observations show irregular upward and westward motion of the order of 150 m/s associated with some of these 'bubbles', while others move more slowly or move with approximately the velocity of the background plasma. The plasma composition signatures indicate that most of the bubbles observed have recently moved upward. Several features of recent VHF radar observations can be understood as resulting from these plasma bubbles, e.g., the 'plume' features and very high apparent velocities seen on range-time-intensity spread F maps and the very complex and/or wide spectral features observed using such radars.

Plasma bubbles and irregularities in the equatorial ionosphere

A numerical simulation of the non-linear evolution of the collisional Rayleigh-Taylor instability using a set of equations appropriate for the equatorial F region ionosphere has been performed. Our results show that the irregularities produced by the instability grow on the bottomside of the F region peak, as predicted by linear theory, and then the irregularities nonlinearly bubble through to the topside, where linear theory predicts no irregularities. Fourier analysis of the irregularities show one dimensional power law power spectrum for both the vertical and horizontal directions.

This new parallel implicit hydrodynamics has been applied to a cookoff problem, as well as, one and two dimensional shock problems. Results are presented and discussed.

Staged development of FA also affirms the necessity of modeling based on a multi-reaction chain. When conditions warrant,e.g., stronger initial disturbance, FA evolves to deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT),demonstrating automatic capture of the DDT.
