Chapter 4. The Media and Language Maintenance

Radio komunitas didirikan untuk melayani kepentingan dan kebutuhan komunitas. Akan tetapi, dalam perkembangannya, radio komunitas tidak dapat sepenuhnya beroperasi sesuai aspirasi anggotanya. Radio komunitas juga harus beradaptasi dengan beragam perkembangan agar dapat mempertahankan kelangsungan eksistensinya. Penelitian yang dilakukan di Radio Komunitas Dapur Remaja (RKDR) di Cinangka, Sawangan, Depok, Jawa Barat ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji gap komunikasi antargenerasi dalam pengelolaan radio komunitas di perkotaan setelah generasi kedua memimpin manajemen. Penelitian ini menggunakan paradigma konstruktivis kritis. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui FGD, wawancara mendalam, dan observasi lapangan. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa terjadi gap komunikasi antara pengelola baru dengan anggota komunitas lama, yang disebabkan adanya perubahan pola interaksi komunikasi secara sosial dan budaya, yang berdampak pada perbedaan pemahaman mengenai pengelolaan radio komunitas. Pengelola radio komunitas, yang merupakan generasi muda, dianggap kurang mengakomodasi kegiatan komunitas sebelumnya dan lebih fokus memikirkan strategi baru untuk mendulang profit dari radio komunitas, sehingga partisipasi komunitas, nilai-nilai dan kepentingan komunitas kurang diperhatikan.

Gap komunikasi antargenerasi dalam pengelolaan radio komunitas di wilayah urban

Despite being a topic of concern globally, child prostitution is understood neither comprehensively nor critically. In particular, there have been few attempts to develop any depth of understanding of child prostitution in sub-Saharan Africa. Current understandings are largely based on adult perspectives while children and young people’s own experiences of involvement have been marginalized. The study draws on theoretical approaches of children’s rights, radical and liberal feminism, structure and agency, and the Capability Approach, to examine decisions made by children within particular economic, social and cultural structures. Using a participatory approach, 19 participants used a range of visual methods to create stories of their journeys into prostitution and their day-to-day lives within the institution of prostitution. In this way, they demonstrated their own understandings of their own involvement.

The study reveals the connections between: i) structural factors: patriarchal society, economic poverty, and cultural norms that govern marriage and limit access to education, ii) threats to livelihoods including HIV/AIDS, orphanhood, and climatic shocks that all contribute to constrain the life choices particularly of girls’ and young women. While it is clear that all but one of the participants exercised agency in deciding to engage in prostitution as a means of survival, they showed how involvement in prostitution further constrained their freedom to live lives that they valued. Describing experiences they endured as ‘being less than human’, they extended understanding of child prostitution by drawing attention to the complex nature of the phenomenon. 

The thesis ends by recommending a multi-dimensional policy approach to address child prostitution, making suggestions for further research including a deeper understanding of the demand side of prostitution, and recommends the use of the Capability Approach to illuminate questions of human development, human rights and social justice among other marginalized populations in developing countries.

The Role of Community Radio in Promotion of Indigenous Minority Languages and Cultures in Malawi

The rise of the internet has offered the opportunity for the news media to communicate with audiences in many significant ways that may have profound consequences in the shaping of public opinion and transforming lives in the global sphere. Through a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this article examines ways in which online news media could be used to reinforce gender stereotypes by promoting patriarchal religious beliefs and how this may have huge implications on women empowerment with regard to political leadership roles in developing democracies. The analysis is drawn from 2014 Malawi elections in which a major opposition party used a campaign slogan peppered with sexist religious and cultural connotations to ridicule and vote out of office southern Africa’s first ever female President – Joyce Banda and her People Party (PP). In May 2014, Malawi held national elections and the main contestants were former President Banda representing the PP, Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Atupele Muluzi of the United Democratic Front (UDF). Mutharika and the DPP won the elections to wrestle away the presidency from Banda and her People’s Party. This article discusses the campaign slogan – Sesa Joyce Sesa [1] – created by the DPP to attack former President Banda in which Malawi’s significant online news media sites played a critical role in the diffusion of the gendered campaign mantra to resonate with the religious identity of majority the electorate. The article reflects on the potential of new media to consolidate deep-rooted religious and cultural beliefs that marginalise women for leadership positions and how that may have a huge bearing on abridging gender inequalities particularly in political representation of developing democracies. Popular Culture as Alternative Media: Reggae Music, Culture and Politics in Malawi’s Democracy

The proliferation of access to digital technology has raised remarkable interest regarding its various effects on everyday life, with recent studies largely focusing on financial inclusion. This study examined the influence of digital inequalities on political participation in Africa’s nascent democracies using the sixth wave of Afrobarometer data covering 36 countries and involving 49 896 respondents. The descriptive analysis shows that nearly 70 per cent of the respondents voted, were interested in public affairs, and took part in political discussions. Furthermore, digital inequalities were found to be geographically correlated, with the highest prevalence in Southern Africa. Using the OLS regression technique, we observe that access to the internet and mobile phones and usage thereof have strong positive relationships with various aspects of political participation, among others. Our results suggest the need to promote policies directed towards reducing digital inequalities, including internet usage subsidies, to engage citizens in political participation.
