This work illustrates the impact of Greek and Latin texts on the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It furnishes concrete evidence of when, where, andhow an ancient author was known and appreciated in monastic, university, and humanist circles. Each article presents a historical survey of the influence and circulation of a particular author down to the present, followed by a listing and brief description of Latin commentaries before 1600 on each of his works. In this edition, Volume III, six authors are treated in separate articles: Damianus; Geminus Rhodius; Hanno; Sallust; Themistius; and Thucydides. Thucydides and Sallust were major historians. Damianus and Geminus Rhodius influenced optics and astronomy. Themistius provided a useful service to later students of Aristotle by paraphrasing Aristotle's treatises on logic, psychology, and natural science. Hanno's account of a voyage around the coast of West Africa has been regarded as a motivating factor behind the explorations of Vasco da Gama and Pedro Alvares Cabral and was cited in controversies involving the Portuguese and Spanish claims to the coasts of Africa and America.

Catalogus translationum et commentariorum: Mediaeval and Renaissance Latin Translations and Commentaries 7: Annotated Lists and Guides

The rediscovery of the ancient Egyptian civilization is a distinctive feature of humanistic culture. This Egyptomania, which extends also to the seventeenth and the subsequent centuries, is well documented in early printed books and focuses on two symbolic objects: the Late Roman treatise on hieroglyphs Hieroglyphica by Horapollo and the Tablet of Isis (Mensa Isiaca), a late imperial age pseudo-Goddess altar. This work outlines the editorial adventures of those publications illustrating and popularizing a textual and graphical corpus that well represents the baroque intellectual imaginary about Ancient Egypt, particularly focusing on antiques collections and editorial activities of a close scholars network in Bologna in the XVII century.

The PhiloMed Portal (http://www.philomed.it/) is intended as a tool for the selection, collection and thematic organization of information, documents, and events that promote the interdisciplinary dialogue between Philosophy and Biomedical Sciences; conceptualized and designed by a working-group with diverse scientific and technical expertises. The portal moves beyond mere captivating graphic styling as it reinvents classical digital library systems moving between the narrative communicative language of the web and the web used as a tool of reference. A hybrid between traditional digital collections and a Virtual Reference Desk, PhiloMed organizes heterogeneous content (events, activities, research projects, news) and multimedia academic-scientific documentation (books and articles, photos, videos, etc.) in "thematic focuses" treated from a multidisciplinary perspective both in hypertext pages and graphic thematic maps. All of the documents are indexed by structured descriptive and semantic metadata (ontology that helps users find material), providing an organized and structured virtual space to be used by interdisciplinary research groups for research and teaching purposes.
