The Object Management Group's (OMG) Model Driven Architecture (MDA) strategy envisages a world where models play a more direct role in software production, being amenable to manipulation and transformation by machine. Model Driven Engineering (MDE) is wider in scope than MDA. MDE combines process and analysis with architecture. This article sets out a framework for model driven engineering, which can be used as a point of reference for activity in this area. It proposes an organisation of the modelling 'space' and how to locate models in that space. It discusses different kinds of mappings between models. It explains why process and architecture are tightly connected. It discusses the importance and nature of tools. It identifies the need for defining families of languages and transformations, and for developing techniques for generating/configuring tools from such definitions. It concludes with a call to align metamodelling with formal language engineering techniques.

Model Driven Engineering

Composition of Web services is much studied to support business-to-business and enterprise application integration in e-commerce. Current Web service composition approaches range from practical languages aspiring to become standards (like BPEL, WS-CDL, OWL-S and WSMO) to theoretical models (like automata, Petri nets and process algebras). In this paper we compare these approaches w.r.t. a selected set of characteristics (like trust, security and performance) and we advocate the use of formal models, and their tool support, to increase one's confidence in web service compositions. This paper can assist web service composition designers and developers to deliver lasting solutions, in concordance with the technology's critical needs.

Web Service Composition Approaches: From Industrial Standards to Formal Methods

Service engineering

Microservices have seen their popularity blossoming with an explosion of concrete applications in real-life software. Several companies are currently involved in a major refactoring of their back-end systems in order to improve scalability. This article presents an experience report of a real-world case study, from the banking domain, in order to demonstrate how scalability is positively affected by reimplementing a monolithic architecture into microservices. The case study is based on the FX Core system for converting from one currency to another. FX Core is a mission-critical system of Danske Bank, the largest bank in Denmark and one of the leading financial institutions in Northern Europe.

From Monolithic to Microservices: An Experience Report from the Banking Domain

In 2017 and 2018, two events were held—in Marburg, Germany, and San Vigilio di Marebbe, Italy, respectively—focusing on an analysis of the state of research, state of practice, and state of the art in model-driven engineering (MDE). The events brought together experts from industry, academia, and the open-source community to assess what has changed in research in MDE over the last 10 years, what challenges remain, and what new challenges have arisen. This article reports on the results of those meetings, and presents a set of grand challenges that emerged from discussions and synthesis. These challenges could lead to research initiatives for the community going forward.

Grand challenges in model-driven engineering: an analysis of the state of the research

Composition of services has received much interest to support business-to-business (B2B) or enterprise applications integration. On one side, the business world has developed a number of XML-based standards to formalize the speciflcation of Web services, their composition and execution. On the other side, the Semantic Web community focuses on reasoning about web resources by explicitly declaring their preconditions and efiects with terms precisely deflned in ontologies. So far, both approaches have been developed rather independently from each other. In this paper the major languages, namely BPEL4WS, BPML, WSCI, WS-CDL and DAML-S, are compared with reference to the requirements identifled and flnally the trend of Services composition is discussed.
