TL;DR: In this article, the case of a two-beam phase grating interferometer is discussed on the grounds of polarization analysis as an example, which does not require micro-polarizer arrays or additional software to eliminate noise caused by vibration.
Abstract: Modulation of polarization is commonly employed in optical interferometry through the use of polarizers and quarter-wave retarders. Phase shifts between interfering beams can be easily controlled with such techniques. This communication describes some details of modulation of polarization which are useful in phase shifting interferometry applied to the study of phase objects. As an application, the case of a two-beam phase grating interferometer is discussed on the grounds of polarization analysis as an example. The configuration presented does not require micro-polarizer arrays or additional software to eliminate noise caused by vibration. This system does not use a double window, and generates two beams, the separation of which can be varied according to the characteristics of the grid used. Experimental results are also given.

TL;DR: An interferometric method to measure the slope of phase objects is presented by implementing a polarizing phase-shifting cyclic shear interferometer coupled to a 4-f Fourier imaging system with crossed high-frequency Ronchi gratings.
Abstract: An interferometric method to measure the slope of phase objects is presented. The analysis was performed by implementing a polarizing phase-shifting cyclic shear interferometer coupled to a 4-f Fourier imaging system with crossed high-frequency Ronchi gratings. This system can obtain nine interference patterns with adjustable phase shifts and variable lateral shear. In order to extract the slope of a phase object, it is only analyzed using four patterns obtained in a single shot, and applying the classical method of phase extraction.

Abstract: This communication describes some details of polarization modulation that are useful in phase-shifting interferometry when applied to phase profile measurements of phase objects. Since non-destructive optical techniques allow surface measurement with high accuracy, a Mach-Zehnder configuration coupled to a 4-f arrangement using phase gratings placed on the Fourier plane was implemented to analyze phase objects. Each beam of the interferometer goes through a birefringent wave plate in order to achieve nearly circular polarization of opposite rotations, with respect to each other. The interference of the fields associated with replicated beams, centered on each diffraction order, is achieved varying the spacing of windows with respect to the grating period. Experimental results are presented for cases of four and nine simultaneously captured interferograms.

TL;DR: An interferometric method to analyze transparent samples using complex fringes generated by a parallel phase shifting radial shear interferometer using two coupled interferometers that reduces the number of captures needed in phase-shifting interferometry.
Abstract: We present an interferometric method to analyze transparent samples using complex fringes generated by a parallel phase shifting radial shear interferometer using two coupled interferometers. Parallel interferograms are generated using two interferometers: the first one generates the polarized base pattern, and the second system is used to generate parallel interferograms allowing the adjustment of the x−y positions of the parallel interferograms. To obtain the optical phase map, parallel phase shift is generated by collocating polarizing filters at the output of the system; the polarizers are placed at arbitrary angles since they do not require adjustment because of the phase-recovery algorithm. The optical phase was processed using a two-step algorithm based on a modified Gram–Schmidt orthogonalization method. Such an algorithm has the advantage of not being iterative and is robust to amplitude modulation. The proposed method reduces the number of captures needed in phase-shifting interferometry. We applied the developed system to examine static and dynamics phase objects.

TL;DR: In this article, a self-scanned 1024 element photodiode array and a minicomputer are used to measure the phase (wavefront) in the interference pattern of an interferometer to lambda/100.
Abstract: A self-scanned 1024 element photodiode array and minicomputer are used to measure the phase (wavefront) in the interference pattern of an interferometer to lambda/100. The photodiode array samples intensities over a 32 x 32 matrix in the interference pattern as the length of the reference arm is varied piezoelectrically. Using these data the minicomputer synchronously detects the phase at each of the 1024 points by a Fourier series method and displays the wavefront in contour and perspective plot on a storage oscilloscope in less than 1 min (Bruning et al. Paper WE16, OSA Annual Meeting, Oct. 1972). The array of intensities is sampled and averaged many times in a random fashion so that the effects of air turbulence, vibrations, and thermal drifts are minimized. Very significant is the fact that wavefront errors in the interferometer are easily determined and may be automatically subtracted from current or subsequent wavefrots. Various programs supporting the measurement system include software for determining the aperture boundary, sum and difference of wavefronts, removal or insertion of tilt and focus errors, and routines for spatial manipulation of wavefronts. FFT programs transform wavefront data into point spread function and modulus and phase of the optical transfer function of lenses. Display programs plot these functions in contour and perspective. The system has been designed to optimize the collection of data to give higher than usual accuracy in measuring the individual elements and final performance of assembled diffraction limited optical systems, and furthermore, the short loop time of a few minutes makes the system an attractive alternative to constraints imposed by test glasses in the optical shop.

TL;DR: In this paper, a wave front shearing interferometer is described in which two images of the wave front under test which are of different sizes are made to interfere, and when the centres of the two images coincide, this results effectively in shear along the radial direction.
Abstract: A new type of wave front shearing interferometer is described in which two images of the wave front under test which are of different sizes are made to interfere. When the centres of the two images coincide, this results effectively in shear along the radial direction. It is shown that the interpretation of the resulting interferogram is comparatively easy. In addition, the instrument is extremely convenient to handle, since all the adjustments can be made with a white light source.

TL;DR: It is shown that either isotropic or anisotropic edge enhancement in any desired orientation can be performed by operating the same spatial filter setup in different illuminating polarization states.
Abstract: Using polarization as an additional parameter apart from amplitude and phase in spatial filtering experiments offers additional advantages and possibilities. An S-waveplate that can convert a linearly polarized light into radially or azimuthally polarized light can also be used for isotropic edge enhancement. For anisotropic edge enhancement, introduction of a polarizer at the output was recommended and edge selection was done by orientation of the polarizer. But the full potential of the S-waveplate as a spatial filter has not been exploited so far. Unlike the standard amplitude and phase-based Fourier filters, which are independent to the state of polarization of the illuminating beam, the S-waveplate acts in a different way depending on the state of polarization. The edge selection does not need to be carried out by changing the orientation of the polarizer. With a fixed polarizer at the output, we show that either isotropic or anisotropic edge enhancement in any desired orientation can be performed by operating the same spatial filter setup in different illuminating polarization states.
