TL;DR: In this article, the effect of aging temperature and particle size ratio of SiC particles on the mechanical and tribological properties of A357 composites reinforced with dual particle size SiC were investigated.
Abstract: In the present work, the effect of aging temperature and particle size ratio of SiC particles on the mechanical and tribological properties of A357 composites reinforced with dual particle size SiC were investigated. The composites were prepared by melt-stirring assisted permanent mold casting technique with different weight fractions (3% coarse +3% fine, 4% coarse +2% fine, and 2% coarse +4% fine) of large and small size SiC particles. These three prepared composites are referred as DPS1, DPS2 and DPS3 composites. The solutionizing temperature was maintained constant at 540 °C for 9 h while the aging was done at 160 °C, 180 °C and 200 °C (T6 treatment) for 6 h. Optical and scanning electron microscopy studies showed fairly uniform dispersion of dual size SiC particles in A357 matrix with good interfacial bonding. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images showed formation of uniformly dispersed needle-like β″ phase and spherical shaped β-Mg2Si precipitates under peak aging conditions. Compared to T6 treated A357 alloy, the T6 treated DPS A357 composites showed improved yield strength, tensile strength, hardness and wear resistance. Among the three composites, hardness and wear resistance of T6 treated DPS2 composite was found to be significantly higher when compared to the other two composites (DPS1 and DPS3). Ratio of large particles to small particles also seems to effect the mechanical and tribological properties. Presence of more small particles was found to be good for strength and ductility whereas more large particles were found to be good for hardness and wear resistance.

TL;DR: In this paper, the corrosion performance of Zn-Ni coating and Zn−Ni-WC composite nanocoatings fabricated on mild steel substrate in an environmentally friendly bath solution was investigated.
Abstract: Zinc (Zn) is one of the five most widely consumed metals in the world. Indeed, more than 50% of all the zinc produced is used in zinc-galvanizing processes to protect steel from corrosion. Zn-based coatings have the potential for use as a corrosion-resistant barrier, but their wider use is restricted due to the poor mechanical properties of Zn that are needed to protect steel and other metals from rusting. The addition of other alloying elements such as Ni (Nickle) and WC (Tungsten Carbide) to Zn coating can improve its performance. This study investigates, the corrosion performance of Zn–Ni coating and Zn–Ni–WC composite nanocoatings fabricated on mild steel substrate in an environmentally friendly bath solution. The influence of WC nanoparticles on Zn–Ni deposition was also investigated. The surface morphologies, texture coefficients via XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), and EDS (Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) were analyzed. The electrochemical test such as polarization curves (PC) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) resulted in a corrosion rate of 0.6948 A/min for Zn–Ni–WC composite nanocoating, and 1.192 A/min for Zn–Ni coating. The results showed that the Zn–Ni–WC composite nanocoating reduced the corrosion rate by 41.71% and showed an 8.56% increase in microhardness compared to the hardness of the Zn–Ni coating. These results are augmented to better wettable characteristics of zinc, which developed good interfacial metallurgical adhesion amongst the Ni and WC elements. The results of the novel Zn–Ni–WC nanocomposite coatings achieved a great improvement of mechanical property and corrosion protection to the steel substrate surface.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a scanning electron microscope (SEM) image as input to characterize slot and burr formation in Inconel 718 alloy, and the results showed that there is a good correlation between automated and manual measurements of slot widths.
Abstract: In this study, the burr and slot widths formed after the micro-milling process of Inconel 718 alloy were investigated using a rapid and accurate image processing method. The measurements were obtained using a user-defined subroutine for image processing. To determine the accuracy of the developed imaging process technique, the automated measurement results were compared against results measured using a manual measurement method. For the cutting experiments, Inconel 718 alloy was machined using several cutting tools with different geometry, such as the helix angle, axial rake angle, and number of cutting edges. The images of the burr and slots were captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The captured images were processed with computer vision software, which was written in C++ programming language and open-sourced computer library (Open CV). According to the results, it was determined that there is a good correlation between automated and manual measurements of slot and burr widths. The accuracy of the proposed method is above 91%, 98%, and 99% for up milling, down milling, and slot measurements, respectively. The conducted study offers a user-friendly, fast, and accurate solution using computer vision (CV) technology by requiring only one SEM image as input to characterize slot and burr formation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an overview of the recent development of Ti-based anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, and special emphasis is placed on capacity enhancement by rational design of hybrid nanocomposites with conversion-/alloying-type anodes.
Abstract: Studying on the anode materials with high energy densities for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is the key for the wide application for electrochemical energy storage devices. Ti-based compounds as promising anode materials are known for their outstanding high-rate capacity and cycling stability as well as improved safety over graphite. However, Ti-based materials still suffer from the low capacity, thus largely limiting their commercialized application. Here, we present an overview of the recent development of Ti-based anode materials in LIBs, and special emphasis is placed on capacity enhancement by rational design of hybrid nanocomposites with conversion-/ alloying-type anodes. This review is expected to provide a guidance for designing novel Ti-based materials for energy storage and conversion.
