Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of automated fiber placement (AFP) manufacturing signature on mechanical performance of composite structures

TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive and detailed experimental study of the influence of imperfections caused during Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) manufacturing is reported, which shows significant knockdown in stiffness and strength due to gaps, with larger gap sizes showing higher knockdown.
Journal ArticleDOI

Optimal fiber paths for robotically manufactured composite structural panels

TL;DR: A novel method to model fiber paths is introduced where each course of the lay-up can be explicitly modeled, including manufacturing artifacts of course width, admissible tow curvature, and control on unintended manufacturing deviations that can lead to gaps and overlaps.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fiber Path Optimization of Symmetric Laminates with Cutouts for Thermal Buckling

TL;DR: In this paper, a finite element finite element approach is proposed to maintain continuity of the fiber paths and to use a computationally efficient model by reducing the number of optimization variables in a four-layer symmetric linear orthotropic laminated plate.
