Location-dependent information services have great promise for mobile and pervasive computing environments. They can provide local and nonlocal news, weather, and traffic reports as well as directory services. Before they can be implemented on a large scale, however, several research issues must be addressed.

The continuous development of wireless networks and mobile devices has motivated an intense research in mobile data services. Some of these services provide the user with context-aware information. Specifically, location-based services and location-dependent queries have attracted a lot of interest.In this article, the existing literature in the field of location-dependent query processing is reviewed. The technological context (mobile computing) and support middleware (such as moving object databases and data stream technology) are described, location-based services and location-dependent queries are defined and classified, and different query processing approaches are reviewed and compared.

Location-dependent query processing: Where we are and where we are heading

The present invention receives list content providing location conditions in a list organized by location conditions in which a reference destination of location-dependent content, being content assigned correspondence to geographical location information, is compiled for each location condition, sent from a content communication server; receives the sent location information; generates area-specific list content comprising information on location-dependent content corresponding to location information, by extracting a list organized by location conditions, in which location conditions matching location information are provided, from the list content; and outputs the area-specific list content.

Location dependent query processing

We present a transaction commit protocol, "Transaction Commit On Timeout (TCOT)," based on a "timeout" approach for Mobile Database Systems (MDS), which can be universally used to reach a final transaction termination decision (e.g., commit, abort, etc.) in any message-oriented system. Particularly suited for a wireless environment, a timeout mechanism is the only way to minimize the impact of the slow and unreliable wireless link. We compare TCOT to a modified version of 2PC to show its superiority based on commit time.

Technological developments in distributed computing, robotics and the emergence of object-orientation have given rise to such technologies to model distributed problem solving. The inherent parallelism and complexity of the classification and discovering patterns from large amounts of data can be delegated to intelligent software agents in this context. In this paper, the agent paradigm along with the main applications and the use of this technology in data mining are briefly discussed.

Intelligent agents: a data mining perspective

As the mobility of people increases, anytime, anywhere computing has become a must. With the advances in wireless communications, the geographical position of the mobile user can be estimated accurately enough to be used to access data dependent on it. Location awareness then enables new kinds of services specific to localized information. While this provides great flexibility for the end user, it creates many challenges for the content providers and wireless operators. We propose an architecture, location dependent services manager (LDSM), between the mobile user and the service/content providers to service location dependent applications which access location dependent data. The proposed middleware does location translation which we call location leveling, to adjust the location granularities and to solve the location mismatch problem. Quality of query results and the complicated queries involving more than one service provider is also supported in this middleware. We give an overview of the proposed architecture, examine the query processing issues and discuss the future work plans.

An architecture for location dependent query processing

Location dependent benchmarking with mobility behavior is a necessary step in the evolution of improvements of wireless and computing technology. The components needed for a mobile computing benchmark include specifications for data, queries, mobile unit behavior and execution guidelines. One of the most unique types of queries present in the mobile computing environment is a location dependent query where its result depends on the issue location. In this paper we describe the main features of a location dependent benchmark including the execution guidelines. While targeted to location dependent applications, it contains more general queries as well. As such, it can be viewed as the first benchmark targeted to the general mobile computing environment.
