Lattice vibrations of manganese oxides. Part I. Periodic structures.

Li4Ti5O12 microspheres composed of nanoflakes were synthesized within 1 h by a combination of a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method and a microwave postannealing process. The Li4Ti5O12 microspheres were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was also investigated as a low-cost green binder. The electrochemical tests, including constant current charge–discharge, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, demonstrated that the electrode using CMC as binder had better high-rate capability than the one with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder. The electrode using CMC and PVDF as binder had the same lithium diffusion coefficient. Rapid Synthesis of Li4Ti5O12 Microspheres as Anode Materials and Its Binder Effect for Lithium-Ion Battery

Lithium has been inserted into the spinel Li4Ti5O12 by both chemical and electrochemical methods. The cation distribution in the lithiated phases has been analyzed by 6,7Li NMR, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, and the distribution in the chemically inserted compound has been analyzed additionally by neutron diffraction. A refinement of structural parameters has been carried out by applying the Rietveld method to the neutron diffraction pattern. It is shown that the two insertion methods are based on different mechanisms. Chemically inserted lithium ions are trapped in the (48f) sites of the spinel structure from which they cannot be extracted by electrochemical means. In contrast to the electrochemical Li-insertion, which is accompanied by a spinel to rocksalt phase transition, no such structural change is found for chemical insertion. The consequences of the two different mechanisms for the reversibility of the insertion process are discussed.

Raman Spectra and Vibrational Analysis of BaFe12O19Hexagonal Ferrite

The infrared complex permittivity functions of three varieties of maghemite, γ-Fe2O3, having different degrees of vacancy ordering, have been determined from their IR reflectance spectra, measured at near to normal incidence on pressed powder pellets. The optical constants therefrom obtained have been verified by using them in the simulation of the corresponding absorption spectra for KBr-diluted pellets, and these are in excellent agreement with the experimental spectra. All calculations are based on a procedure for the estimation of the effective dielectric function of a mixture, which incorporates percolation features, recently developed by the authors.
