TL;DR: In the majority of the analyzed elements the nurses' evaluation was higher than that of doctors and patients, which indicates that they demonstrate more positive image of the profession than the other groups.
Abstract: Background The study was aimed at comparing the perception of the nurses' professional image by three groups: doctors, patients and nurses. The following elements of the image were taken into account: professional, personal and interpersonal characteristics as well as general beliefs on the nursing profession. Material and methods The examined group consisted of 160 participants: 50 doctors, 50 patients and 60 nurses employed or currently treated in provincial and district hospitals. To test the professional image of nurses a new measurement tool has been developed. It permits to assess professional, personal and interpersonal characteristics attributed to nurses and selected beliefs on the nursing profession. The study took into consideration the following socio-demographic factors: gender, age, marital status, place of residence, education and setting, and also profession-related factors (job seniority; additional courses and specializations) as regards doctors and nurses and occupational activity and relations with nurses as regards patients. Results The surveyed groups differed in their assessment of a majority of characteristics attributed to nurses. The characteristics were appraised lower by doctors than by nurses, which indicates a more negative attitude of the former. The patients' appraisal was also lower than that of nurses, except for mental strength and tidiness. However, nurses perceived their professional position in the society and medical profession as the lowest. The characteristics, which did not differ in their assessment between groups were analyzed as well. Conclusions The study allowed determining those elements of the nurses' professional image, whose appraisal differed between the surveyed groups. In spite of the existing common elements, the differences dominated. In the majority of the analyzed elements the nurses' evaluation was higher than that of doctors and patients, which indicates that they demonstrate more positive image of the profession than the other groups.

TL;DR: Excessive demands and lack of esteem are key reasons for burnout among surgical nurses and job security can increase burnout when too many resources are invested and career opportunities do not appear.
Abstract: Objective Job rewards have both, an intrinsic and an extrinsic motivational potential, and lead to employees’ development as well as help them to achieve work goals. Rewards can balance job demands and protect from burnout. Due to changes on the labour market, new studies are needed. The aim of our study was to examine the role of demands and individual rewards (and their absence) in burnout among surgical nurses.

TL;DR: Views regarding the image of nursing and midwifery among nurses and midwives in three East African countries, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are explored to inform policy makers and educators about key concepts that affect the image in East Africa.
Abstract: Evidence suggests that there is a negative image of nursing and midwifery that does not promote these professions as attractive career options. Furthermore, there is a paucity of studies documenting how nursing and midwifery is perceived in East Africa and where such studies exist they are country-specific. The aim of this study was to explore views regarding the image of nursing and midwifery among nurses and midwives in three East African countries, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. An exploratory descriptive cross-sectional study administered online using Survey Monkey Questionnaires assessed the views and perceptions of nurses and midwives regarding the image of nursing and midwifery professions. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s Chi square tests were used to analyse the data. The semi-structured questions were analysed using content analysis. A total of 551 participants took part in the study. The majority were females (61.8%), registered nurses/midwives (45.8%), and aged 30–39 years (34.2%). Most of the respondents were from Kenya (39.7%) and Uganda (32.9%). About two-thirds of the nurses and midwives in this study perceived nursing/midwifery as both trusted and respected professions and expressed having a level of control over how their image was portrayed. Conversely, the nurses and midwives were conscious that the public had mixed responses about the nursing/midwifery professions specifically, some members of the public described nurses/midwives as professionals, knowledgeable and caring, others perceived nurses/midwives to be rude, cruel, unkind, lazy, unkempt, and maids. This study offers an interesting insight about the image of nursing/midwifery in East Africa. Findings from this study will inform policy makers and educators about key concepts that affect the image of nursing and midwifery in East Africa. The findings will be used to design marketing materials to help improve the image of nursing and midwifery in the region and other African countries.

TL;DR: The results demonstrate that physicians were the group of most emotionally exhausted and, simultaneously, most life-satisfied persons, while nurses presented the highest level of dehumanization and the lowest level of satisfaction from life achievements.
Abstract: Psychologists emphasize that people employed in social service organizations are vulnerable to chronic stress and burnout syndrome caused by a close and unsatisfied interpersonal relationship. However, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a feeling of diminished personal accomplishment can be attributed to other external factors. One of them is poor living and occupational conditions. According to a report by OECD, the healthcare system in Poland is the worst among the member countries. The aim of the present study was to define the relationship between occupational burnout and the rating of the Polish healthcare system among the medical staff. The study included 224 participants. The Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Dehumanized Behavior and the Glebocka and Ruzyczka scale of Behavioral Indicators of Patient’s Dehumanization were applied. The evaluations of the healthcare system were also collected. The results demonstrate that physicians were the group of most emotionally exhausted and, simultaneously, most life-satisfied persons, while nurses presented the highest level of dehumanization and the lowest level of satisfaction from life achievements. Only did physicians evaluate the healthcare system as a relatively good one. They were also more tolerant of latent dehumanization. A relationship between the dimensions of burnout and the evaluation of healthcare system were observed. The emotionally exhausted or prone to dehumanization persons were more likely to evaluate the Polish healthcare system negatively.
