Abstract: Method and apparatus for sensing the simultaneous proximity of one or more fingers or other appropriate objects to a capacitive touch sensor. A modulator/demodulator pair drive and sense either a single trace or a pair of traces. In a dual trace embodiment, differentially sensed signals are then peak detected converted from voltage to current. The output signal is then calibrated to adjust for trace variations, followed by appropriate gain and level shifting, and analog-to-digital conversion for use as the input to a microcontroller.

Abstract: An improved flexible substrate for a touchpad (10), with the flexible substrate (10) having conductive ink for forming a sensor array (14). A printed circuit board (26) is also used, but only for the components (16, 18 and 20) which need to connect to the array, and not the array, thus giving a smaller printed circuit board. The printed circuit board (26) can have the components compactly mounted on it taking advantage of the close spacing available in PC board technology. The PC board itself has wider spacing on its contacts at its outer edges, allowing it to be attached by conductive glue to the flexible substrate.

Abstract: A joystick that detects position and movement using a capacitive sensor. The joystick has a stick mounted to allow movement within a housing, a conductive element at a first end of the stick, and a capacitive sensor. The capacitive sensor may be a capacitive touchpad. It determines position by measuring the change in capacitance on a set of conductive traces. The capacitive sensor may be shaped as a plane or may be hemispherically-shaped. The conductive element may also be triangular or other distinctive shape to allow detection of movement. An advantage of such a joystick is that absolute positioning may be determined, along with relative positioning.

Abstract: A method for improving the productivity and useability of a graphical user interface by employing various methods to switch between different cursors which perform different types of functions (12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22). The invention exploits the absolute and relative positioning capabilities of certain types of pointing devices to improve the productivity and useability of various types of graphical user interfaces. The invention provides a method for using a gesture, motion or initial position with a pointing device to select a function, followed by a subsequent motion which is used to select a value.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for simultaneously tracking multiple finger (202-204) and palm (206, 207) contacts as hands approach, touch, and slide across a proximity-sensing, compliant, and flexible multi-touch surface (2). The surface consists of compressible cushion (32), dielectric electrode (33), and circuitry layers. A simple proximity transduction circuit is placed under each electrode to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio and to reduce wiring complexity. Scanning and signal offset removal on electrode array produces low-noise proximity images. Segmentation processing of each proximity image constructs a group of electrodes corresponding to each distinguishable contacts and extracts shape, position and surface proximity features for each group. Groups in successive images which correspond to the same hand contact are linked by a persistent path tracker (245) which also detects individual contact touchdown and liftoff. Classification of intuitive hand configurations and motions enables unprecedented integration of typing, resting, pointing, scrolling, 3D manipulation, and handwriting into a versatile, ergonomic computer input device.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a multi-functional hand-held device capable of configuring user inputs based on how the device is to be used. Preferably, the multifunctional hand-held device has at most only a few physical buttons, keys, or switches so that its display size can be substantially increased. The multifunctional hand-held device also incorporates a variety of input mechanisms, including touch sensitive screens, touch sensitive housings, display actuators, audio input, etc. The device also incorporates a user-configurable GUI for each of the multiple functions of the devices.
