Carbon nanotube–polymer composites: Chemistry, processing, mechanical and electrical properties

Ultrathin, uniform single-walled carbon nanotube networks of varying densities have been fabricated at room temperature by a vacuum filtration method. Measurements of the sheet conductance as a function of nanotube network density show 2D percolation behavior. In addition, the network transparency in the visible spectral range was examined and the results are in agreement with a standard thin-film model: fits to the standard theory indicate U ac ) Udc for transmission measurements at 550 nm. Transmission measurements also indicate the usefulness of nanotube network films as a transparent, conductive coating. Avenues for improvement of the network conductance are discussed.

Percolation in transparent and conducting carbon nanotube networks

Nanocomposites, a high performance material exhibit unusual property combinations and unique design possibilities. With an estimated annual growth rate of about 25% and fastest demand to be in engineering plastics and elastomers, their potential is so striking that they are useful in several areas ranging from packaging to biomedical applications. In this unified overview the three types of matrix nanocomposites are presented underlining the need for these materials, their processing methods and some recent results on structure, properties and potential applications, perspectives including need for such materials in future space mission and other interesting applications together with market and safety aspects. Possible uses of natural materials such as clay based minerals, chrysotile and lignocellulosic fibers are highlighted. Being environmentally friendly, applications of nanocomposites offer new technology and business opportunities for several sectors of the aerospace, automotive, electronics and biotechnology industries.

Nanocomposites: synthesis, structure, properties and new application opportunities

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) promise to advance a number of real-world technologies. Of these applications, they are particularly attractive for uses in chemical sensors for environmental and health monitoring. However, chemical sensors based on CNTs are often lacking in selectivity, and the elucidation of their sensing mechanisms remains challenging. This review is a comprehensive description of the parameters that give rise to the sensing capabilities of CNT-based sensors and the application of CNT-based devices in chemical sensing. This review begins with the discussion of the sensing mechanisms in CNT-based devices, the chemical methods of CNT functionalization, architectures of sensors, performance parameters, and theoretical models used to describe CNT sensors. It then discusses the expansive applications of CNT-based sensors to multiple areas including environmental monitoring, food and agriculture applications, biological sensors, and national security. The discussion of each analyte focuses on the strategies used to impart selectivity and the molecular interactions between the selector and the analyte. Finally, the review concludes with a brief outlook over future developments in the field of chemical sensors and their prospects for commercialization.

Carbon Nanotube Chemical Sensors

The design and development of a compact wireless gas sensor with a surface modified multiwalled carbon nanotube (f-CNT) chemiresistor as the sensing element is presented in this paper. f-CNT/polymer composite sensing film is patterned on a printed circuit board and is integrated to the wireless system. The change in resistance of the CNT/polymer composite film due to exposure of different gases is utilized as the principle of this gas sensor. The response for different organic vapors are evaluated and it is observed that the f-CNT/PMMA composite film shows fast response and change in resistance of the order of 102–103 due to its surface modification.

A compact wireless gas sensor using a carbon nanotube/PMMA thin film chemiresistor

The design and development of composite thin films of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and surface-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f-CNTs) for gas-sensing applications are presented in this paper. The responses of these composites for different organic vapors were evaluated by monitoring the change in the resistance of thin films of composite when exposed to gases like dichloromethane, chloroform, acetone, methanol, ethyl acetate, toluene and hexane. It was observed that the f-CNT/PMMA composite showed a higher response. There was an increase in resistance of the order of 102–103, due to surface modification, when exposed to dichloromethane, chloroform and acetone. The sensing mechanism is explained on the basis of volume expansion and polar interaction of various vapors on the CNT surface.

Carbon nanotube/PMMA composite thin films for gas-sensing applications

Composites of carbon a nanotube with polymers are a developing and interesting area of research. The dispersion of the nanotube in polymer matrices is an important factor while making its nanocomposites. Even though in-situ polymerization approach offers a better approach for synthesizing homogeneous polymer nanotube composites, the dispersion of the nanotubes in the monomer solution is a problem. In this article we report a new chemical method for dispersing nanotubes in monomer and the preparation of uniform tubular composite of polyaniline (PANI) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT). For this the oxidized multiwalled nanotube (o-MWNT) was functionalized with p-phenylenediamine, which gave phenylamine functional groups on the surface. This functionalization helped to disperse the nanotubes in acidic solution. The in-situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of these well dispersed nanotubes gave a new tubular composite of carbon nanotube having an ordered uniform encapsulation of doped polyaniline. The phenylamine functional groups on the surface were grown into polyaniline chain so that the composite contains polyaniline functionalized CNT and they were no more an “impurity” in the final nanocomposite. The microscopic and structural properties of this composite were compared with that of a composite prepared under identical condition using o-MWNT.

Polyaniline / carbon nanotube composites: starting with phenylamino functionalized carbon nanotubes

A nanocomposite of a multiwalled carbon nanotube and polythiophene was prepared by functionalizing the nanotube surface with a polythiophene, poly[3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2,5-thienylene], containing pendant hydroxyl groups. The composite was characterized by IR, high resolution TEM and conductivity measurements. The poly[3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2,5-thienylene] (PHET) was synthesized by the oxidation polymerization of 2-(3-thienylethanol) using FeCl3 and CHCl3. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes were synthesized by a microwave CVD method and oxidized with potassium permanganate using a phase transfer catalyst in mild conditions. The COOH groups formed on the nanotube surface were converted to COCl using thionyl chloride and it was then condensed with the polythiophene at high temperature in anhydrous DMF. High resolution TEM images showed that the functionalization provided a firm coating of the conducting polymer on nanotube walls. This nanocomposite with PHET grafted to CNT showed higher conductivity than a nanocomposite of PHET and CNT in the same percentage weight composition prepared by ultrasonic mixing of the two. Such a material was designed and synthesized with a view to electronic and sensor applications.

A novel nanocomposite from multiwalled carbon nanotubes functionalized with a conducting polymer

In tubular nanocomposites prepared from carbon nanotubes and polyaniline, carbon nanotubes can improve the structural ordering, compactness, delocalization of charges and carrier mobility. Such properties are very much critical in the case of organic semiconducting materials for electronics applications. In this paper we describe the synthesis of a nanotubular composite of polyaniline and carbon nanotube using p-phenylenediamine functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes. This functionalization helped to disperse the nanotubes well in acidic solution. The in situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of these well dispersed nanotubes gave rise to a new tubular composite of carbon nanotubes having a uniform encapsulation of doped polyaniline. It also improved the structural order, molecular packing and delocalization of the charges in the material.
