Waste to phosphorus: A transdisciplinary solution to P recovery from wastewater based on the TRIZ approach.

For decades, the river health of the Yellow River source region (YRSR) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau has been a focal issue owing to its unique geographic location and ecological functions. This study investigated the ecological status of the headwater streams, the main stem, and the tributaries of the Yellow River in the YRSR using the tolerance values of macroinvertebrates and those related to biotic indices. The macroinvertebrate assemblages of the headwater streams were characterized by lower biodiversity than the tributaries downstream, based on comparisons of taxonomical composition, functional feeding group composition, and the pollution-tolerant capacity of taxa. The headwater streams had a lower ratio (16%) of pollution-sensitive macroinvertebrate taxa than that of the tributaries downstream (30%). The biotic indices (family- and genus-level biotic indices) indicated that the ecological health of the headwater streams was comparably poorer than that of the downstream tributaries. The combined effect of vulnerable natural conditions and increasing human disturbance is likely the main cause of eco-environmental degradation in the Yellow River headwater streams.

River health assessment of the Yellow River source region, Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China, based on tolerance values of macroinvertebrates

Quantitative knowledge on the use of aquatic insects as bioindicators has not been elucidated in Egypt. Given these concerns, the goal of the present study is to use aquatic insect communities as biotic indices for evaluating water quality in some Egyptian fresh water streams. The study was carried out for a period of one year during summer and autumn 2010 and winter and spring 2011. Sampling was done using kicking and dipping method to collect the aquatic insects. Insects were identified up to the family level. Several metrics were used to analyze the aquatic insect data. Physic-chemical parameters of water samples were analyzed using standard methods. A total of 438 aquatic insect individuals (representing 19 families from 7 orders), 535 (20 insect families from 7 orders) and 241 (13 families from 6 orders) were recorded from El-Kassed, Rasheed and Kafr el Zayat streams. According to total taxa richness for Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (SEPT) -biotic index, the situation of water quality in the three water bodies was moderate impact; however it was "Good" according to Stroud water research center (SWRC). The SEPT is the most suitable biotic index for calculating water bio-class in Egyptian streams. Margalef's water quality index values were less than 3, indicating that the water quality of the three streams was impacted. Various anthropogenic activities were showing their impacts on the water quality of Egyptian streams. This study, as elsewhere, shows that aquatic insect communities could be good indicators of water quality and should be used as bioindicators of water quality of fresh water streams in Egypt.

Aquatic Insects as Bio Indicators for Pollution in Some Egyptian Streams.

Labo and Clarin rivers are very important to many communities in Misamis Occidental, Philippines. Hundreds of people living near the two rivers depend on these waters for domestic and industrial purposes. This study was conducted to assess the water quality of two major river systems, Clarin and Labo rivers in Misamis Occidental, Philippines. Physico-chemical and biological parameters were assessed in three different sampling sites in each river. Results showed that dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, nitrate and phosphate along the forest and agro forest sampling sites were at levels that fall within the standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Philippines. However, the sampling station in Labo River located along the agricultural area showed values that are non-compliant with the DENR standard. The water temperature and pH range in sampling stations along the forest were within the tolerable range that will not cause stress to the aquatic organisms. Bacteriological analysis showed that all sampling stations were positive for coliforms (Enterobacter aerogenes and Escherichia coli). The sampling stations along the agroforest and agricultural areas had high total fecal coliform load. Results indicate the need to have proper environmental management program in Clarin and Labo rivers.

Water quality assessment of Labo and Clarin Rivers in Misamis Occidental, Philippines

Environmental monitoring of river water quality in Albania, using biological and chemical parameters, is a fast and effective way to assess the quality of water bodies.The aim of this study was to investigate Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT), Biotic index-Richness using macroinvertebrates to assess the water quality, with special reference to nutrient (phosphorus and nitrogen) levels in the Devolli, Shkumbini and Osumi rivers. Our objective was to investigate the relationships between the measures of benthic macroinvertebrate communities and nutrient concentrations to assess water quality. The rivers' benthic macroinvertebrates were collected during different seasons in 2012. The biological and chemical parameters used in the current study identified them as quick indicators of water quality assessment. The total number of macroinvertebrate individuals (n = 15,006) (Osumi river: n = 5,546 organisms; Devolli river: n = 3,469 organisms; and Shkumbini river: n = 5,991 organisms), together with the EPT group (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera), showed that the water quality at the river stations during the above-mentioned period belonged to Classes II and III (fair water quality and good water quality, respectively). The classification of the water quality was also based on the nitrogen and total phosphorus contents. The pollution tolerance levels of macroinvertebrate taxa varied from the non-tolerating forms encountered in environments with low pollution levels to the tolerating forms that are typical of environments with considerable pollution levels.

Biomonitoring of water quality of the Osumi, Devolli, and Shkumbini rivers through benthic macroinvertebrates and chemical parameters

Erzeni and Ishmi Rivers flow in central Albania. The geographical position and geologic composition of Rivers basin have a specific study importance. The areas where the Rivers flows have been areas of many changes and developments lately, influencing the aquatic ecosystem in general and mainly impacting the water quality. For the biological assessment of Rivers water quality different groups of macro invertebrates are used. They are good indicators of biodiversity and habitat quality and their presence is closely connected with the general ecological status of the river ecosystem. (Lee N. 2003). Benthic macro invertebrates are determined as crucial elements and have a great importance in the biological assessment of water quality (Water Framework Directive - WFD). In this study the water quality results are given for two years of monitoring (2011 – 2012) in three sampling stations for each River in Albania. The paper presents the aquatic ecosystem situation based on data gathered on insect and invertebrate fauna. From the analyses of data is important to mention the presence of benthic sensitive organisms (Environmental Protection Agency- USA) in the sampling stations in Erzeni River, while this group of invertebrates is missing in monitoring stations in Ishmi River. Two other groups, benthic invertebrates with a medium tolerance toward pollution and tolerant taxons were present in both Rivers. Beside the classification of species according their tolerance, Biotic Index is calculated based on all the macro invertebrate groups found in each River.

Biological assessment of water quality inErzeni and Ishmi Rivers in Albania, using asbiological indicators, different groups ofmacro invertebrates, during 2011 - 2012

According to the instructions from Water Framework Directive (WFD) for the water bodies' study, benthic macro invertebrates are an important element. The purpose of this study, realised in 2009-2010, is the identification of the relations between benthic macro invertebrates and the assessment of ecologic elements, which characters two rivers of Albania, Shkumbin and Mat. The results show that the total number of organisms, in four stations of Shkumbin, is 1052, 27 of which are related to 27 taxons. In Mat, are found 2641 organisms which are related to 39 taxons. EPT- Biotic Index shows different values in different stations: St 1= 2.26; St 2 =2.49; St 3 = 3.97; St 4 =3.96. Mat results with these values: St 1 =3.71; St 2 =3.67; St3 =3.85; St 4=3.7. According to these results, the water quality of two stations of Shkumbin and three stations of Mat, is excellent (0-3.75), while in two other Shkumbin's stations and in the other Mat's station is good (3.75-6.5). We also accounted for rivers, SWRC- Index Biotic and the two parameters accord to each other. Both rivers have a good water quality and a light impact.

Assessment of Water Quality of Mat and Shkumbin Rivers, According to the Dates of Benthic Macroinvertebrates in 2009-2010

This study was carried out on Shushica River, a branch of Vjosa River, located in the Vlora district south west Albania, during 2017. This river flows from the Kuci area parallel with the main road in all her longitude. The recent process of rehabilitation of this road and the process of human population growth in this region is expected to have a severe impact in watershed and water quality of this area through reduction of microhabitat diversity and its associated biodiversity. During this study three stations were chosen randomly on the stream and samples were taken seasonally (Spring and Summer 2017). Here we are presenting the preliminary data based on the identification of a total number of 841 organisms. The collected samples include organisms from class: Annelid (Oligochaeta) and Insecta. Insects are dominating throughout all the sampling period. Between organisms of class Insecta dominant are the families Chironomidae and Simulidae (Diptera), Elmidae (Coleoptera), Hydropsychidae (Trichoptera), and Heptagenidae (Ephemeroptera). Based on the collected data the EPT index (abundances in the sample of the organisms belonging to the orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera in comparison to the total number of organisms in the sample) was calculated. Based on the published data of different recent studies the water quality of the river is related directly with the higher relative abundance of those taxa.
