TL;DR: This methodological paper addresses practical strategies, implications, benefits and drawbacks of collecting qualitative semi-structured interview data about Internet-based research topics using four different interaction systems: face to face; telephone; email; and instant messaging.
Abstract: This methodological paper addresses practical strategies, implications, benefits and drawbacks of collecting qualitative semi-structured interview data about Internet-based research topics using four different interaction systems: face to face; telephone; email; and instant messaging. The discussion presented here is based on a review of the literature and reflection on the experiences of the authors in performing completed research that used those four interaction systems. The focus is on functional effects (e.g. scheduling and other logistics, data transcription and data management), as well as methodological effects (e.g. ability to probe, collecting affective data, and data representation). The authors found that all four methods of data collection produced viable data for the projects they completed, but that some additional issues arose. Five themes emerged that form the organization of the paper: (1) interview scheduling and participant retention; (2) recording and transcribing; (3) data cleaning a...

TL;DR: The potential outcomes of this exclusion of older adults from a society based on physical social contact are discussed and recommendations for rectifying the situation are provided, with a particular focus on older adults in long-term care facilities.
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has excluded older adults from a society based on physical social contact. Vulnerable populations like older adults also tend to be excluded from digital services because they opt not to use the internet, lack necessary devices and network connectivity, or inexperience using the technology. Older adults who are frail and are not online, many of whom are in long-term care facilities, struggle with the double burden of social and digital exclusion. This paper discusses the potential outcomes of this exclusion and provides recommendations for rectifying the situation, with a particular focus on older adults in long-term care facilities.

TL;DR: It was found that studies typically evaluated quality in relation to the substance and formality of content, as well as to the design of technological platforms, which suggests the permeation of a user‐centered perspective into the evaluation of health information systems.
Abstract: The quality of online health information for consumers has been a critical issue that concerns all stakeholders in healthcare. To gain an understanding of how quality is evaluated, this systematic review examined 165 articles in which researchers evaluated the quality of consumer-oriented health information on the web against predefined criteria. It was found that studies typically evaluated quality in relation to the substance and formality of content, as well as to the design of technological platforms. Attention to design, particularly interactivity, privacy, and social and cultural appropriateness is on the rise, which suggests the permeation of a user-centered perspective into the evaluation of health information systems, and a growing recognition of the need to study these systems from a social-technical perspective. Researchers used many preexisting instruments to facilitate evaluation of the formality of content; however, only a few were used in multiple studies, and their validity was questioned. The quality of content i.e., accuracy and completeness was always evaluated using proprietary instruments constructed based on medical guidelines or textbooks. The evaluation results revealed that the quality of health information varied across medical domains and across websites, and that the overall quality remained problematic. Future research is needed to examine the quality of user-generated content and to explore opportunities offered by emerging new media that can facilitate the consumer evaluation of health information.

TL;DR: The findings indicate that the voice chat room is best suited for companionship while the online forum is used primarily for informational support and the exchange of emotional and instrumental support is most likely to occur via instant messaging.
Abstract: Using the grounded theory approach, this ethnographic study examines the relationship between the use of three different modes of computer-mediated communication (CMC) and the types of social support exchanged within an online community of older Chinese (age 50 or older). The findings indicate that the voice chat room is best suited for companionship while the online forum is used primarily for informational support. The exchange of emotional and instrumental support is most likely to occur via instant messaging (IM). These findings suggest that each of these particular modes of CMC, due to its inherent features, may be specialized to sustain certain interactions and relationships. Yet, because older Chinese in this study employ multiple modes of CMC to interact and develop relationships, the overall relationships developed through CMC are multidimensional. Resume Multimodal Computer-Mediated Communication and Social Support among Older Chinese Internet Users Using the grounded theory approach, this ethnographic study examines the relationship between the use of three different modes of computer-mediated communication (CMC) and the types of social support exchanged within an online community of older Chinese (age 50 or older). ZhaiYao Yo yak
