Abstract: Energy produced by intermittent renewable resources is sharply increasing in the United States. At high penetration levels, volatility of wind power production could cause additional problems for the power system balancing functions such as regulation. This paper reports some partial results of a project work, recently conducted by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). The project proposes to mitigate additional intermittency with the help of Wide Area Energy Management System (WAEMS) that would provide a two-way simultaneous regulation service for the BPA and California ISO systems by using a large energy storage facility. The paper evaluates several utility-scale energy storage technology options for their usage as regulation resources. The regulation service requires a participating resource to quickly vary its power output following the rapidly and frequently changing regulation signal. Several energy storage options have been analyzed based on thirteen selection criteria. The evaluation process resulted in the selection of flywheels, pumped hydro electric power (or conventional hydro electric power) plant and sodium sulfur or nickel cadmium batteries as candidate technologies for the WAEMS project. A cost benefit analysis should be conducted to narrow the choice to one technology.

Abstract: The entire project addresses the issue of mitigating additional intermittency and fast ramps that occur at higher penetration of intermittent resources, including wind genera-tion, in the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) and the California Independent Sys-tem Operator (California ISO) control areas. The proposed Wide Area Energy Storage and Management System (WAEMS) will address the additional regulation requirement through the energy exchange between the participating control areas and through the use of energy storage and other generation resources. For the BPA and California ISO control centers, the new regulation service will look no different comparing with the traditional regulation resources. The proposed project will benefit the regulation service in these service areas, regardless of the actual degree of penetration of the intermittent resources in the regions. The project develops principles, algorithms, market integration rules, functional de-sign and technical specifications for the WAEMS system. The project is sponsored by BPA and supported in kind by California ISO, Beacon Power Corporation, and the Cali-fornia Energy Commission (CEC).

Abstract: Purpose To compare the short-term effect of anatomic video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) segmentectomy and VATS lobectomy. Patients and methods From January 2011 to December 2012, 21 patients underwent VATS segmentectomy and 61 underwent VATS lobectomy. Intraoperative blood loss, operating time, postoperative drainage time, length of hospital stay, postoperative complications, local recurrence, and survival were compared between the two groups. Results The intraoperative blood loss and average hospital stay were less in the segmentectomy group than in the lobectomy group (P 0.05). Only one patient died because of heart disease. The two groups had a similar incidence of postoperative complications (P>0.05). There was one (4.8%) local recurrence after segmentectomy and two (3.3%) after lobectomy (P>0.05). Conclusion VATS segmentectomy could be performed safely and is a method with favorable 1-year survival. It may be the ideal surgical procedure for patients with solitary pulmonary nodules in early stage lung cancer, especially for those with limited cardiopulmonary reserve or significant comorbidities.

Abstract: Background: This study was designed to investigate the preferences for treatment of lobectomy in Chinese lung cancer patients and differences in the psychological and social factors that influence treatment decision-making. Methods: One hundred and forty patients with stage I lung cancer were recruited from Hebei Cangzhou Central Hospital. Before surgery, the patients completed a questionnaire that surveyed their preferences for treatment and the relevant influencing factors. Differences in psychological and social characteristics were compared between lung cancer patients who chose video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and those who opted for open thoracotomy. Results: Among the 135 valid questionnaires, 79 patients preferred VATS and 56 patients chose open thoracotomy. Potential side effects, doctors' recommendation, the prognosticated chance for cure, cosmesis, and financial burden influenced the patients' decisions. Conclusion: The minimally invasive advantages of VATS, including lesser trauma to the chest wall, earlier remission of postoperative pain, faster recovery, less bleeding, and improved cardiopulmonary function made VATS more attractive to patients needing lobectomy for lung cancer. However, the choice of VATS over open thoracotomy is still influenced by the degree of prognosticated cure and the feasibility of surgery.

Abstract: Objective: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been demonstrated in playing an important role in the physiological and pathological processes (such as cancer). This paper aims to clarify the role of Circ_0006677 in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) progression. Methods: Using clinical data and in vitro cell line models, we revealed the tumor-suppressive role of circ_0006677 in lung cancer. Using the online bioinformatics tool, we predicted the target of circ_0006677 and further validated its regulatory mechanisms responsible for its tumor suppressor function in NSCLC. Results: Circ_0006677 expression was reduced in NSCLC tissues of patients and lung cancer cells in comparison to adjacent normal tissues. Lower expression of circ_0006677 was significantly associated with poorer patient survival. Overexpression of circ_0006677 significantly inhibited the ability of NSCLC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and glycolysis. Mechanically, circ_0006677 could inhibit NSCLC progression and glycolysis by regulating the expression of the signal transducer inhibitor SOSC2 through sponging microRNA-578 (miR-578). Conclusion: Circ_0006677 prevents the progression of NSCLC via modulating the miR-578/SOSC2 axis.

Abstract: The paper reviews different approaches, technologies, and strategies to manage large-scale schemes of variable renewable electricity such as solar and wind power. We consider both supply and demand side measures. In addition to presenting energy system flexibility measures, their importance to renewable electricity is discussed. The flexibility measures available range from traditional ones such as grid extension or pumped hydro storage to more advanced strategies such as demand side management and demand side linked approaches, e.g. the use of electric vehicles for storing excess electricity, but also providing grid support services. Advanced batteries may offer new solutions in the future, though the high costs associated with batteries may restrict their use to smaller scale applications. Different “P2Y”-type of strategies, where P stands for surplus renewable power and Y for the energy form or energy service to which this excess in converted to, e.g. thermal energy, hydrogen, gas or mobility are receiving much attention as potential flexibility solutions, making use of the energy system as a whole. To “functionalize” or to assess the value of the various energy system flexibility measures, these need often be put into an electricity/energy market or utility service context. Summarizing, the outlook for managing large amounts of RE power in terms of options available seems to be promising.

Abstract: Energy storage systems (ESSs) are enabling technologies for well-established and new applications such as power peak shaving, electric vehicles, integration of renewable energies, etc. This paper presents a review of ESSs for transport and grid applications, covering several aspects as the storage technology, the main applications, and the power converters used to operate some of the energy storage technologies. Special attention is given to the different applications, providing a deep description of the system and addressing the most suitable storage technology. The main objective of this paper is to introduce the subject and to give an updated reference to nonspecialist, academic, and engineers in the field of power electronics.
