Rate-distortion improvement of directional wavelets by megablocking
TL;DR: This paper calculates the rate-distortion performance of the directional wavelets on a class of images and shows that the quadtree partitioning deteriorates the performance, and proposes another scheme, called megablocking, which outperforms the quad tree approach.
