Multiple successional pathways in human-modified tropical landscapes: New insights from forest succession, forest fragmentation and landscape ecology research
Víctor Arroyo-Rodríguez,Felipe P. L. Melo,Miguel Martínez-Ramos,Frans Bongers,Robin L. Chazdon,Jorge A. Meave,Natalia Norden,Bráulio A. Santos,Inara R. Leal,Marcelo Tabarelli +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that secondary succession in tropical landscapes is a multifactorial phenomenon affected by a myriad of forces operating at multiple spatio‐temporal scales, and succession must be examined using more comprehensive explanatory models.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: It is shown that most tree species are extremely rare, meaning that they may be under serious risk of extinction at current deforestation rates, and a methodological framework for estimating species richness in trees is provided that may help refine species richness estimates of tree-dependent taxa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Drastic erosion in functional attributes of tree assemblages in Atlantic forest fragments of northeastern Brazil
Bráulio A. Santos,Carlos A. Peres,Marcondes A. Oliveira,Alexandre S. Grillo,Cecília P. Alves-Costa,Marcelo Tabarelli +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors test the hypothesis that tropical tree assemblages in both small forest fragments and along forest edges of very large fragments are functionally much more similar to stands of secondary growth (5-65-yr old) than to core primary forest patches.
Journal ArticleDOI
Designing optimal human-modified landscapes for forest biodiversity conservation.
Víctor Arroyo-Rodríguez,Lenore Fahrig,Marcelo Tabarelli,James I. Watling,Lutz Tischendorf,Maíra Benchimol,Eliana Cazetta,Deborah Faria,Inara R. Leal,Felipe P. L. Cudney-Valenzuela,Carmen Galán-Acedo,Miriam San-José,Ima Célia Guimarães Vieira,J. W. Ferry Slik,A. Justin Nowakowski,A. Justin Nowakowski,Teja Tscharntke +22 more
TL;DR: The proposed landscape scenarios represent an optimal compromise between delivery of goods and services to humans and preserving most forest wildlife, and can therefore guide forest preservation and restoration strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plant β-diversity in fragmented rain forests: testing floristic homogenization and differentiation hypotheses
Víctor Arroyo-Rodríguez,Matthias Rös,Federico Escobar,Felipe P. L. Melo,Bráulio A. Santos,Marcelo Tabarelli,Robin L. Chazdon +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, a large vegetation data set from a hierarchically nested sampling design (450 plots in 45 forest patches in 3 landscapes with different deforestation levels) at Los Tuxtlas rain forest, Mexico was analyzed using multiplicative diversity decompositions of Hill numbers.
