This review summarizes recent developments in the theory of spin glasses, as well as pertinent experimental data. The most characteristic properties of spin glass systems are described, and related phenomena in other glassy systems (dielectric and orientational glasses) are mentioned. The Edwards-Anderson model of spin glasses and its treatment within the replica method and mean-field theory are outlined, and concepts such as "frustration," "broken replica symmetry," "broken ergodicity," etc., are discussed. The dynamic approach to describing the spin glass transition is emphasized. Monte Carlo simulations of spin glasses and the insight gained by them are described. Other topics discussed include site-disorder models, phenomenological theories for the frozen phase and its excitations, phase diagrams in which spin glass order and ferromagnetism or antiferromagnetism compete, the Ne\'el model of superparamagnetism and related approaches, and possible connections between spin glasses and other topics in the theory of disordered condensed-matter systems.

Spin glasses: Experimental facts, theoretical concepts, and open questions

MAGNETIC materials of mesoscopic dimensions (a few to many thousands of atoms) may exhibit novel and useful properties such as giant magnetostriction, magnetoresistivity and magnetocaloric effects1–4. Such materials also allow one to study the transition from molecular to bulk-like magnetic behaviour. One approach for preparing mesoscopic magnetic materials is to fragment bulk ferromagnets; a more controllable method is to take a 'bottom-up' approach, using chemistry to grow well defined clusters of metal ions5,6. Lis7 has described a twelve-ion manganese cluster in which eight of the Mn ions are in the +3 oxidation state (spin S=2) and four are in the +4 state (S=3/2). These ions are magnetically coupled to give an S=10 ground state8, giving rise to unusual magnetic relaxation properties8,9. Here we report that the magnetization of the Mn12 cluster is highly anisotropic and that the magnetization relaxation time becomes very long below a temperature of 4 K, giving rise to pronounced hysteresis. This behaviour is not, however, strictly analogous to that of a bulk ferromagnet, in which magnetization hysteresis results from the motion of domain walls. In principle, a bistable magnetic unit of this sort could act as a data storage device.

Magnetic bistability in a metal-ion cluster

The physical principles underlying some current biomedical applications of magnetic nanoparticles are reviewed. Starting from well-known basic concepts, and drawing on examples from biology and biomedicine, the relevant physics of magnetic materials and their responses to applied magnetic fields are surveyed. The way these properties are controlled and used is illustrated with reference to (i) magnetic separation of labelled cells and other biological entities; (ii) therapeutic drug, gene and radionuclide delivery; (iii) radio frequency methods for the catabolism of tumours via hyperthermia; and (iv) contrast enhancement agents for magnetic resonance imaging applications. Future prospects are also discussed.

Applications of magnetic nanoparticles in biomedicine

We report on the design, verification and performance of mumax3, an open-source GPU-accelerated micromagnetic simulation program. This software solves the time- and space dependent magnetization evolution in nano- to micro scale magnets using a finite-difference discretization. Its high performance and low memory requirements allow for large-scale simulations to be performed in limited time and on inexpensive hardware. We verified each part of the software by comparing results to analytical values where available and to micromagnetic standard problems. mumax3 also offers specific extensions like MFM image generation, moving simulation window, edge charge removal and material grains.

The design and verification of Mumax3

Electrons have a charge and a spin, but until recently these were considered separately. In classical electronics, charges are moved by electric fields to transmit information and are stored in a capacitor to save it. In magnetic recording, magnetic fields have been used to read or write the information stored on the magnetization, which 'measures' the local orientation of spins in ferromagnets. The picture started to change in 1988, when the discovery of giant magnetoresistance opened the way to efficient control of charge transport through magnetization. The recent expansion of hard-disk recording owes much to this development. We are starting to see a new paradigm where magnetization dynamics and charge currents act on each other in nanostructured artificial materials. Ultimately, 'spin currents' could even replace charge currents for the transfer and treatment of information, allowing faster, low-energy operations: spin electronics is on its way.
