TL;DR: In this paper, the matrix isolation technique has been employed to study the interaction of the molecular halogens ClF and Cl/sub 2/ with PH/sub 3/, (CH, sub 3/)/sub 3/P, PF/sub 4/ClF, and PCl/sub 5/P. For the first two phosphines, infrared and UV/vis spectral evidence suggested formation of very strongly bound molecular complexes.
Abstract: The matrix isolation technique has been employed to study the interaction of the molecular halogens ClF and Cl/sub 2/ with PH/sub 3/, (CH/sub 3/)/sub 3/P, PF/sub 3/, and PCl/sub 3/. For the first two phosphines, infrared and UV/vis spectral evidence suggested formation of very strongly bound molecular complexes. For example, the Cl-F stretching mode shifted from 768 cm/sup -1/ for parent ClF to 406 cm/sup -1/ in its complex with PH/sub 3/, and to 311 cm/sup -1/ in its complex with (CH/sub 3/)/sub 3/P. These shifts are comparable to those of the ClF/sup -/ anion, suggesting substantial charge rearrangement in the molecular complex. For the most reactive halogen/trihalophosphine system (PF/sub 3//ClF), direct reaction was observed upon deposition, while for the PF/sub 3//Cl/sub 2/ and PCl/sub 3//Cl/sub 2/ systems reaction was observed after near-ultraviolet irradiation. The wavelength dependence of this photolysis provided indirect evidence for weak complex formation in these two systems.
